It came as a surprise when a recent announcement revealed that God of War will be the latest PlayStation IP to head to live action. It was a project that looks to have been pitched by Amazon early this year, later receiving confirmation. As such, we’ll likely see the development of Kratos and his son Atreus in live-action sooner rather than later. With God of War racking numerous awards this year, it’s only fitting to make the announcement. Here’s what we know so far:

The Story
God of War will be telling the story of Kratos from the 2018 game, and most probably the recent 2022 game. It will not dive back into the original trilogy, though we’ll likely see some references to it. It would be great to have some flashback moments where we see the more aggressive and angrier Kratos of the past battling Greek mythology. However, it seems that PlayStation is sticking to its current releases as they are the ones that are appealing to this generation of gamers.
It will be a challenge though, seeing as you’ll need a big budget to make the nine realms look as distinct as possible. Seeing as Amazon was the one who created Rings of Power, they do have the money to fund a big project. Hopefully, we see more attention to detail (The Boys) rather than deviating from the source material (Rings of Power).
It doesn’t look to deviate, as part of this God of War team are veterans who helped create the game. In this case, it will be highly similar to how they developed The Last of Us television series, even hiring the game’s director to work on the show.
Casting?
The announcement is very recent, and there have been no confirmations on who will play who. It will be challenging to cast, mainly because of the excellent performance of Christopher Judge. They may even opt to bring him in for the role, though it all depends on what the showrunners want to achieve. Some popular fan casting for Kratos include:
- Jason Momoa
- Dave Bautista
- Travis Fimmel
There is also a bevy of actors they can take to portray the role of other characters in the film. Some of the more notable personalities Kratos and his son encounter in the 2018 game include:
- Freya
- Baldur
- Magni and Modi
- Sindri
- Brok
We’ll likely get more confirmation through this year, but this is a long-term project. Fans expect at least two years in development before we see any sign of the live-action adaptation on our screens.
PlayStation Continues Its Live-Action Foray
Titles with live-adaptation projects include The Last of Us, Twisted Metal, Ghost of Tsushima, and God of War. Seeing the trend of PlayStation exclusives getting live-action projects, what would be your best bet for an adaptation? Horizon: Zero Dawn and Death Stranding are good candidates.
