Suzume no Tojimari’s box office records surpass Shinkai’s Your Name and Weathering with You
Suzume me Tojimari was released in Japan on November 11, 2020. The film sold over 1.33 million tickets during the first three days and earned a whopping 1.88 billion yen (approx. US$13.49 million). It grabbed the #1 place at the box office, finally putting ‘One Piece Film: Red’ at #3 during its 15th weekend.
- ‘Suzume no Tojimari’ sold 38.7% more tickets and earned 47.4% more than Shinkai’s most famous work, ‘Your Name.’
- The film also grossed 14.4% more sales than ‘Weathering With You,’ earning the title for the best opening weekend out of the entirety of Shinkai’s movies.
- The $13.49 million debut for Suzume is also the 9th-best three-day opening in Japanese box office history.
Despite the release of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever on the same day, Suzume took over screens all over Japan with consecutive screenings consistently from morning to night. While Wakanda Forever only got a small number of screenings in comparison.
Will Suzume no Tojimari be able to beat the final grossing of Shinkai’s previous works?
Even though Suzume’s opening weekend was the best of Makoto Shinkai’s career so far, there is no assurance the film’s total take will finish close to the last Japanese gross of Weathering with You ($131.5 million USD). And it doesn’t seem that the movie will even catch up to Your Name ($233.8 million).
Those movies might have had a lower opening weekend total. However, the two of them were released during or not long before Japan’s summer holidays. Mostly, a much better time of the year for films to be enjoyed and have a profitable run at the box office.

To reach the top of the Japanese box office, Makoto Shinkai’s Suzume will need to catch up with the smash hit. Yes, One Piece Film: Red that released on August 6, 2022. The film has earned $129 million to date.
- Across the Pacific, One Piece has struggled to have a similar effect and dropped a staggering 84.5% in its second weekend in North American cinemas. Earning just $1.45 million ($12.7 million total).
- According to ANN, in its 15th weekend, One Piece Film Red dropped from #1 to #3 at the Japanese box office. The film earned about US$1,04 million from Friday to Sunday. The film sold a total of 13.16 million tickets overall.

Shinkai’s work’s have been brilliant in the anime industry
Shinkai’s work is well known for its amazing landscape, complex characters, and some soul-touching music. As if those three factors weren’t sufficient, the filmmaker is an extraordinary writer and gives us a story that shakes us from the inside.
Even if you don’t like Shinkai’s movies, it’s impossible that you have the same outlook on the music. There’s not one otaku who doesn’t have ‘Nandemonaiya‘ on their playlists, and RADWIMPS is the reason.
