Hidden away in the creepy Shadow Keep of Shadow of the Erdtree, the Golden Hippopotamus is a beast that’ll make you rethink your definition of “graceful.” This glitzy behemoth isn’t just about looks; it’s got moves – and we’re not talking about the Electric Slide.

Phase 1
This hippo’s got a few tricks up its sleeve (or should we say, under its gold plating?):
- Charging Bite: Think of it as a hungry hippo on steroids. Dodge and roll.
- Head Slam: This isn’t your average headache. When it rears back, run! That shockwave is not a vibe.
- Tail Swipe: It’s not just a tail; it’s a weapon of mass destruction. Stay close to its side to avoid getting swatted like a fly.
This hippo skips leg day, so make it regret it. Attack those pins to make it stumble and give you some breathing room. This boss also hates bleeding (who doesn’t?).
Bust out your bleed weapons or incantations for maximum ouch factor. Wait for those awkward post-attack moments to land a few hits, then back off before it throws a golden tantrum.
Spirit Ashes aren’t just for show. They can distract the hippo while you go to town.
Phase 2
At about 60% health, this hippo goes full Midas Mode, but it’s more nightmare than a fairytale:
- Needle Rain: Imagine a golden porcupine with anger issues. When it starts glowing, run for your life or become a pincushion.
This isn’t the time to get up close and personal. Respect the needles and keep your distance. Keep working those legs until it can’t stand it anymore. If you’re a pro on horseback, Torrent can be your golden ticket to dodge those attacks like a rodeo champ.
Additional Tips
- Don’t be under-leveled. 165-175 is the sweet spot.
- Make sure your weapons and armor are upgraded, or you’ll be doing the “walk of shame” back to your Site of Grace.
- These little guys are like damage negation in a bottle. Chug them for extra protection.
- Feeling overwhelmed? Call in your friends or Spirit Ashes for a golden beatdown.
