Don Mancini took inspiration from two dolls when designing the murdering menace. He took inspiration from the Cabbage Patch and My Buddy dolls. Both toys were popular among kids during the time, with effective marketing that made kids go wild about them.
Don wanted to create a ‘dark satire about how marketing affected children.’ He was also inspired by an evil doll named Talky Tina that was featured in an episode of The Twilight Zone called ‘Living Doll’.
2) His name is a combination of the names of three real-life killers

Chucky’s full name in the movie is Charles Lee Ray. All three words in his name are taken from three different criminals.
The doll’s first name, Charles, is borrowed from a person called Charles Manson. Manson was a cult leader who was responsible for the murder of nine people in 1969. He was controlling and emotionally manipulative, which helped him collect followers that he used to commit crimes on his behalf.
Chucky’s middle name, Lee, is taken from Lee Harvey Oswald, the prime suspect behind the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Meanwhile, his last name is inspired by James Earl Ray, the assassin who shot and killed Martin Luther King Jr.
3) The doll had a very different origin story

The initial script of the movie had a completely different origin for the doll. Originally, the doll in the movie had human-like skin that could bleed from cuts and wounds. Children would then have to buy Good Guy bandages to fix the doll’s injuries.
Mancini has shared that in his first draft, Andy would accidentally cut his thumb and mix it with Chucky’s blood, which would bring the doll to life and cause it to attack people disliked by Andy.
4) Moving the doll was a laborious task and took 11 people
In the movies Chucky came to life through a combination of perspective, animatronics and very tiny people in costume.
The series has leans more into traditional puppetry with some animatronic help.

The first movie came out in 1988 when CGI and animatronics were still developing. The movie was made with an animatronic puppet that required 11 people to control each of its different parts. From eyes to legs to eyebrows, the doll could move numerous parts to show lifelike movements.
Even with such technology, it took multiple takes to get the perfect shot. The movie’s special effects shop supervisor, Howard Berger, once shared that it took 27 takes to make the doll hit the button in the electrocution scene.
5) Complex scenes were filmed with Ed Gale in Chucky costume

While a majority of the scenes were shot with the animatronic doll, it was not possible for the entire movie. Complex scenes in the movie were filmed with Ed Gale. The sets were made 30% bigger, and Gale was put into a costume. This led the actor to get injured multiple times, especially in the fire sequence.
In the scene, the actor was supposed to be pulled up a fireplace but had an accident. He was dropped from a height of six to eight feet, causing a back injury.
The show’s third season may release in late 2023 or early 2024 according to rumors. Until then, fans can watch the first and second seasons on SYFY, and Amazon Prime.
