Social media was sent into a frenzy when news broke out that Academy award nominee Margot Robbie would be portraying one of the biggest figures in toy history, Barbie herself. A beacon of beauty and confidence, Barbie has symbolized legendary status amongst populations, primarily female groups.
And who better to play her than an actress known worldwide for her mesmerizing beauty and undeniable talent? To make things better, the movie was stated to be directed by Oscar nominee Greta Gerwig, with the screenplay being written alongside famed director Noah Baumbach. Apart from surprising casting reveals, Barbie is another summer pop culture flick for young girls. Or is there something more surprising to learn about this highly anticipated movie?
A Stupendous Kickoff for ‘Barbie’
In a movie that has been 14 years in the making, Barbie went through many issues that lasted in development alone. In 2021 however, after 12 years of changes in rights and formalities, Gerwig was announced as the director, with Baumbach being the co-writer. Since then, multiple viral pictures of Margot Robbie dressed as Barbie was leaked to the public, stirring up a lot of conversations about her character design, interesting fashion choice, and many other unanswered questions.
To take things up a notch, La La Land actor and academy award winner Ryan Gosling was announced to be playing the role of Ken, the male protagonist of the Barbie universe and her recurring love interest. His picture as Ken went viral, drawing mixed conversations about the casting choice. Donning a blonde hair color, a denim vest, and an undergarment line with the word “Ken” was rapidly making its way through social media.
Why is ‘Barbie’ so anticipated?
A leading star of romantic movies throughout the 2000s, Ryan Gosling still hasn’t lost his touch to look like the heartthrob he’s stated to be. With all of the buzz being created around the movie, fans were even more shocked to find out that others would also be portraying Barbie and Ken alongside Robbie and Gosling. This might have come as a huge surprise to the fanbase, but it sent the interesting meter for the conversation into overdrive.

With many others in undisclosed roles, some of the roles that have been made public are the likes of Simu Liu and Ncuti Gatwa, that are reported to be portraying other versions of Ken. Sex Education star Emma Mackey, Hari Nef, and Issa Rae are said to be playing the different versions of Barbie. The icing on the cake is knowing that Anchorman actor Will Ferrell is portraying the CEO of Mattel (the manufacturing company of the Barbie dolls) in this movie.
Expectations at an all-time high
Barbie has been the forefront idol in shaping fashion and playtime for girls from age 3. Therefore, watching a flick that shaped a significant aspect of your playtime in your childhood can be personal and emotional. The takeaways and predictions about the plot have been slim, but what’s been stated as of now is that Margot Robbie’s Barbie gets sent out of ‘Barbie land’ and goes on a journey of self-discovery.
