Lord of the Rings (LOTR) is considered by many the best trilogy movie ever. Based on a novel by J.R.R. Tolkien published in 1954, HBO MAX is set to release the trilogy series, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, on the 2nd of September 2022. Now is a good time to look back and highlight the main characters of the Lord of the Rings while listing down the rest of them.
The Trilogy: Lord of the Rings
Lord of the Rings’ subtitles is The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King. Directed by Peter Jackson, this epic fantasy novel film is set on the Middle-Earth, a human-inhabited world. The story revolves around the Rings of Power and the One Ring.
The Elven-smiths of the Noldorin settlement of Eregion created the 19 Rings of Power to preserve Middle-Earth and make it as magnificent as the Valinor, the Blessed Realms. Sauron, the Lord of Mordor, secretly created the One Ring to Rule among the Rings of Power.
The characters of The Llord of the Rings include Aragorn, Frodo Baggins and the Hobbits (Sam, Pippin, Mary), Gandalf, Sauron, Smeagol/Gollum, and a lot more. This is the full list of the main characters including all side characters of the series.
Lord of the Rings: Characters
Aragorn II Elessar (Viggo Mortensen)
Aragorn is one of the trilogy’s protagonists, Ranger of the North, the confidant of Wizard Gandalf, and the heir of Isildur. He is the traditional hero who led the Reunited Kingdom’s military campaigns and the re-establishment of rule over Gondor who served as a King for 122 years. Aragorn’s best leadership skills, among others, were displayed during the visit to the Undead King and his battle speech on their final stand in The Lord of The Rings: Return of the King.
Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood) and the Hobbits
Frodo Baggins for most of the Trilogy is the Ring-bearer of the One Ring. As the main protagonist, he is the most renowned character as his quest is to bring the One Ring to Mount of Doom and destroy it. Among the many who helped Frodo, the three hobbits who helped him are Merry Brandybuck, Samwise Gamgee (Sam), and Pippin Took.
The Wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen)
Gandalf has both a playful and a very powerful wizard side. He is known for his party tricks with the hobbits and has one of the most iconic entrances in the Lord the Rings: Two Towers at the Battle of Helm’s Deep.
The wizard is also the one who revealed the One Ring’s Secret to Frodo. While Gandalf is a very powerful Wizard, he cannot touch the One Ring as it quickly corrupts his being.
Sauron, The Dark Lord of Mordor (Sala Baker)
Sauron, consumed by lust and greed, is the creator of One Ring whose purpose is to conquer all the Rings of Power and all of Middle-Earth. One Ring is consumed by all the greed, hate, corruption, and power of Sauron which transmits to anyone bearing the ring.
Gollum / Smeagol (Andy Serkis)
Not necessarily but predominantly evil, Gollum is the epitome of the One Ring’s curse. The infamous “My Precious” was best delivered by Gollum. It is expressed as a way of admiring and desiring the power and corruption emitted by the One Ring.
Legolas, Prince of the Woodland Realm (Orlando Bloom)
Legolas is one of the most likable characters. He is portrayed as a pretty boy although this marksman can bring down an Oliphaunt, a humongous elephant-like creature. A personal favorite, I am not gonna lie.
Gimli, The Lord of the Glittering Caves (John Rhys-Davies)
Gimli is a tenacious and brave dwarf who most of the time banters with Legolas. He is the only dwarf member of the Fellowship of the Ring, a group formed to destroy the One Ring.
Arwen, Lady of Rivendell / Queen of the Reunited Kingdom
(Liv Tyler)
Arwen is the catalyst for unifying elves and men. The most beautiful among the last generation of High Elves in Middle earth. Later became the Queen of the Reunited Kingdom after reciprocating Aragorn’s love and marrying him.
Eowyn, Shieldmaiden of Rohan
(Miranda Otto / Nellie Bellflower)
Eowyn, despite having a minor role, is an embodiment of what women can do if not limited by their societal gender role. Eowyn, the supposed maiden of interest of Aragorn, was supposed to stay at Rohan as instructed by King Theoden. However, Eowyn with her bravery still proceeded to battle and ended up killing the Witch King of Angmar, Sauron’s Second in Command.
