Now that Insomniac has successfully put out Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, it’s time for players to share their two cents about their experience. For some, it was the perfect follow-up game to Spider-Man (2018) and Miles Morales. On the other hand, there are gamers who have been starting discussions and trying to answer the question: is Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 too short? Because of this, the game’s director spoke up about it and explained why they decided to keep the game short and sweet.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Director shares thoughts about the Game Length
Even before its release last October 20, Insomniac Games addressed rumors about the new Spidey game’s length. During an interview with VG247, Insomniac’s senior game director Ryan Smith confirmed that Spider-Man 2’s game length is in the “same ballpark as the first game.” It will take players around 16-18 hours to complete the main story of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which most gamers find to be too short.
This is because they want to deliver a fresh and memorable experience with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Unfortunately, that didn’t go as planned, and most players are complaining about Spider-Man 2 being too short. These players felt like the $70 on Insomniac’s latest release wasn’t giving them their money’s worth.
“Our job is to make sure that you feel no matter how long it is, it’s worth that money, it’s worth that investment.” – Bryan Intihar to BBC
In response to this, Insomniac’s director, Bryan Intihar, gave a similar answer to Smith’s explanation about the game length. While speaking with BBC, Intihar said that they aim to give players a very satisfying experience in terms of storytelling to avoid making players think they wasted $70 on the new game.
Gaming Community Reacts
If some players say that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is too short, is that a bad thing? It seems the community is divided on this one, as there are mixed reactions regarding this question. One of the hot Reddit discussions in the Gaming community allows us to look at things from both sides.
One of the comments shared that although they have no idea how Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 goes, they’re not entirely let down by the current length it takes to beat the game. They also shared that they’d prefer a game that may be short yet well-polished and executed than a long game that only reuses and recycles ideas.
We’d have to agree with u/-csephus- since a game’s value should not be measured on length alone. We should also consider the thought and effort put into creating a masterpiece that gamers from all walks of life can grow to love and appreciate.
What good is a game that will take a long time to beat but can become exhausting as it just drags on along the way? Though we wish it would have been a bit longer, we can’t conclude that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is too short. There are plenty of other ways to keep yourself busy instead of just speedrunning through the whole thing.
We can’t invalidate those gamers who feel that the new Spider-Man game is not worth $70, but there are plenty of ways to try and see what the game has to offer. You can take your time by completing side quests, finding collectibles, or just swinging around New York City and appreciating the new web-swinging features introduced in the game.
Here’s to hoping we’ll get a great set of DLCs from Insomniac that will give us more things to do and discover as we swing around the city that never sleeps.
