My Happy Marriage is based on the light novel series of the same name by Souichirou Hatano. The story follows Miyo Saimori, a young woman who is born without supernatural talent in a family where everyone else possesses unique abilities.
She is forced into a life of servitude by her abusive stepmother, and when she finally comes of marriageable age, her hopes of being whisked away to a better life crumble after she discovers her fiancé’s identity: Kiyoka Kudou, a commander apparently so cold and cruel that his previous would-be brides all fled within three days of their engagements.
With no home to return to, Miyo resigns herself to her fate—and soon finds that her pale and handsome husband-to-be is anything but the monster she expected. Kiyoka is actually a kind and gentle man who is simply misunderstood, and as Miyo gets to know him, she begins to fall in love with him.
However, their happiness is not without its challenges. Miyo’s stepmother and half-sister are determined to keep her down, and Kiyoka’s enemies are always lurking in the shadows. But together, Miyo and Kiyoka will face any obstacle to build the happy marriage they both deserve.
My Happy Marriage time period
The anime is set in the 19th-century Meiji Restoration era in Japan. The Meiji Restoration was a period of great social and political upheaval in Japan, as the country transitioned from a feudal society to a modern nation-state. Meiji Restoration, in Japanese history, was the political revolution in 1868 that brought about the final demise of the Tokugawa shogunate (military government)—thus ending the Edo period (1603–1867)—and, at least nominally, returned control of the country to direct imperial rule under Mutsuhito (the emperor Meiji).
There are a couple of historical references in the anime that suggest that it is set in the Meiji Restoration era:

2. The hairstyles worn by the characters are also consistent with the Meiji era. Men typically wore their hair in a topknot, while women wore their hair in a variety of styles, including buns, braids, and chignons.
3. The anime mentions the Shinsengumi, a real-life group of samurai who fought for the Tokugawa shogunate during the Meiji Restoration. The Shinsengumi were known for their distinctive uniforms, which consisted of black hakama and a white top with a red haori (short jacket).
