NBA Rumor: Russell Westbrook for Kyrie Irving Trade Possible?

Something big is brewing between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Brooklyn Nets this offseason. And if this thing pulls through, it surely will break the NBA. Both teams are allegedly working under closed doors on a trade that would send Kyrie Irving to California and Russell Westbrook to Brooklyn, New York.

The former MVP in Russell Westbrook is without a doubt one of the best point guards we have ever seen. But, last season was definitely not his year. After a disappointing output, Lakers fans are already protesting to trade Russ away. One notable team that seems to be the most possible end-user of a Westbrook trade would be the Brooklyn Nets. Now that the Nets and the superstar point guard Kyrie Irving seem to be in an “impasse”, this team could pursue a swap between Russ and Kyrie.

As of late, below are the following offers (and counteroffers) that are going back and forth between the Lakers and the Nets

  • Lakers offer Russell Westbrook plus a future first-round pick in exchange for Kyrie Irving
  • Nets counter offered with: Kyrie Irving and Seth Curry for Russell Westbrook, Talen Horton-Tucker, plus two future first-round picks
  • Lakers negotiated with an offer consisting of Russell Westbrook, Talen Horton-Tucker, but only one first-round pick in return for Kyrie Irving and Seth Curry
  • The Nets held back and wanted Russell Westbrook and two first-round picks for Kyrie Irving alone
  • And, the last counter offer the Lakers gave was: Russell Westbrook, a first-round pick, and a second-round pick in exchange for Kyrie

Both teams seem to not catch a break but it also seems that a deal is likely to be done in no time.

Who’s the better player, Russ or Kyrie?

Most would argue that despite Westbrook’s career achievements and accolades, Kyrie Irving is still the better overall basketball player. The 30-year-old guard can score in so many ways with ease and does not solely rely on his athleticism to be effective.

On the other hand, Russ is a triple-double machine that prides himself on athleticism and explosiveness. He may have looked washed in the 2021-2022 season but let’s not forget the fact that this man is a former league MVP.

But, the real question is, who is the better fit for LeBron James and the Lakers squad?

We saw how miserably the trio of LeBron, Russ, and Anthony Davis went last season. You know it’s bad enough already when a group of All-Stars can’t even reach the Play-In tournament. That being said, it would be safe to say that Westbrook surely did not fit in the LeBron James system. Moreover, his style of play did not complement the Lakers, and usually looks like a shell of himself.

Meanwhile, we all remember the magnitude of damage LeBron and Kyrie could do when they played together in Cleveland. To put things in perspective, Kyrie and LBJ are the first teammates to ever score 40 points each in the same NBA Finals game. However, Kyrie is infamous for being a headcase and an enigma. He has caused indirect troubles in every team he has been and it always affects the team. But, if you take that away, Kyrie is the perfect key for the Los Angeles Lakers to win another championship come the 2022-2023 season. With LeBron still playing at an elite level and Anthony Davis in full health, the Lakers could be a lock for the Larry O’Brien trophy next year.
