NBA: What Is Going On with the Los Angeles Lakers?

Feb.9, 2022, the Los Angeles Lakers faced the reigning NBA champions – the Milwaukee Bucks. The battle between two of the most talented bigs in the NBA (i.e. Anthony Davis and Giannis Antetokounmpo) looked promising, but the outcome was nowhere near expectation.

Giannis, a.k.a “The Greek Freak” took care of business. He then handed out a 40-piece and almost perfect performance, shooting an amazing 17 for 20. He also locked down Anthony Davis, holding him to only 22 points. Bucks then proceeded to take home the win by 15 points, 131-116.

During the post-game interview, a reporter asked if they (Lakers) could get to the Bucks’ level, to which LeBron answered honestly.

“Do I think we can reach the level where Milwaukee is right now? No.”

James, who is regarded as one of the greatest to play the game, admitted that their loss made it clear that they are not even close to Milwaukee’s status as of this season.

Los Angeles Lakers vs. Portland Trailblazers

After a blowout loss, just a few hours ago, the former NBA 2020 Champions had just lost again to a very mediocre team in Portland Trailblazers. They were up against a shorthanded Blazers, with Damian Lillard not playing and C.J. McCollum, who was just traded to the New Orleans Pelicans yesterday. The Lakers are looking terrible right now. Even though LeBron is still playing at an elite level, the team sure is struggling as of late.

Even with Anthony Davis back, they still fell short by 2 points against Portland (107-105). The Blazers unsung hero is the young rising star, Anfernee Simmons, who scored 29 huge points. The huge fan base of the Lakers, including basketball fans around the world, is blaming Russell Westbrook for the team’s underachievement this season. He hasn’t been playing well and is looking like a shell of his former all-star caliber self.

Rumor Mill

Rumors are spreading throughout the league of a possible trade involving Russell Westbrook, Talen Horton-Tucker, and Kendrick Nunn. Westbrook’s former team, the Houston Rockets, is showing interest and is willing to trade John Wall for Russ.

Now, what really is going on with the Purple and Gold franchise? The reason that comes up in the mind of fans is Westbrook’s underwhelming performance, Anthony Davis’s nagging injuries, Frank Vogel being unable to handle the team, or the management itself. Either way, the Lakers aren’t looking good. They don’t seem to be a championship contender anymore.
