Netflix’s Kengan Ashura Season 2 Returns 2023

One wouldn’t forget the Netflix Original martial arts action anime Kengan Ashura. Not after Yabako Sandrovich’s manga original topped even Mob Psycho 100 to win the fan contest for an anime adaptation of a manga series. Having premiered the second part of the series on October 2019, Netflix anime returns to us Kengan Ashura season 2 to finish its Kengan Annihilation Tournament Arc.

The confirmation came last Thursday when the official Twitter page of Netflix Anime tweeted the premiere of the Kengan Ashura part 3.
(To not confuse you, it’s actually Kengan Ashura Season 2 which will have two cour parts 3 and 4. Parts 1 and 2 are two cour of the same season 1. Part 3 will be the first cour of season 2.)

How Kengan Ashura Manga Beat Mob Psycho 100 In 2015 to Be Animated

Shogakukan’s web comic magazine had held a fan contest to vote for the top manga series which would then be animated in 2015. Kengan Ashura won, topping even the blockbuster Mob Psycho 100 to win a seat on Netflix’s streaming platform.

Seiji Kishi (is famously known for works such as Angel Beats!, Assassination Classroom, Classroom of the Elite, and Danganronpa) directed the anime while Makoto Uezu took over the series composition. Both the director and Uezu had experience working together in Ansatsu Kyoushitsu and Danganronpa, among other famous titles.

Netflix’s Kengan Ashura Is About A Battle Hardy ‘Gotta Win It All

  • The plot follows the protagonist Ouma Tokita, street-named Ashura who is a fighter trying to prove his worth. The world of Kengan Ashura lays the European gladiator equivalent tradition named Kengan competitions. These competitions have been held since the dawn of the Edo era.
  • The businessmen and merchants resolve conflicts and business upheavals through hired fighters. The corporate giants pit the combatants against each other in a colosseum. The gladiators have to fight to intense brutality to meet the expectations and suffice the corporate biggies to whom they have sold their souls.

  • Many warriors fight for the green cash. But there is plenty battle hardened adrenaline-seeking fighters who seek to become as mighty as they possibly can. For them, the dealings of the merchants are merely a curtain. An excuse to quench their thirst for bloodlust and battle glory.
  • Hideki Nogi of the Nogi group hires Ashura to fight his battles. Attending Ashura is the weary old manager Kazuo Yamashita, who lives up to his impression of a middle-class gentleman.
  • The plot unfolds with the unexpected chemistry between the fragile Kazuo Yamashita and an unhinging Ouma. The hero may remind viewers of a similar martial arts anime protagonist Baki. Baki is another famous martial arts show whose distribution and streaming rights are the property of Netflix. Heck, one may even mistake both the series as part of a similar universe (multiverse?) just out of the sheer similarity of their execution.

How Did Fans React to Part 3’s Return?

Kengan Ashura Part 3 is ready to pick up the story left in 2019. Netflix released Part 1 and part 2 released in June and October of 2019 respectively. Fans did not expect Season 2 to come out this late as assessed from their reactions. Check them up below.

Where Part 2 Left Us

Kengan Ashura Season 2

Kengan Ashura Part 3 will focus on the developments of Ouma after the second round of the Kengan Annihilation Tournament where Raian of the Kure clan faced his enigmatic defeat. Ouma was able to utilize an end moment of enlightenment – where through the hallucinations of his late mentor Niko, he advances a new form of Niko Style.

Concluding

So long as one is not enamored completely by the nostalgia of Baki (which is also going for a second season very soon) one should, in theory, receive Kengan Ashura part 3 nicely. With of course the same enthusiasm for blood-hungry fist battles. One would also remember that half of the fans divide into CG haters and another half into those appreciating it for what it is.

Kengan Ashura is one of the finest addition to Netflix anime in terms of the Martial Art genre. Yet I will concur that the likes of Hajime no Ippo would still fair better than both Baki and Kengan Ashura combined. (Although you may claim it to be a sports anime more than a martial art one.)
