Overwatch: “Cole Cassidy” Gets Mixed Reactions From Fans

During summertime, Blizzard had made revelations that they would be changing a hero’s name in Overwatch, and it will also change their policy on naming characters. This sudden decision is after the controversy revolving around their parent company Activision Blizzard’s sexual harassment lawsuit.

Earlier this Friday, Blizzard has announced that going forth, the character of McCree will be known as Cole Cassidy. This name might have some linkages to Butch Cassidy, a famous outlaw. He, alongside Harry “Sundance Kid” Longabaugh, had looted and robbed many banks and trains throughout South America and the United States during the early 1900s.

In the Twitter account of the game Overwatch, they also included a brief explanation regarding the change in the name of the character. The biography read that “Running from his past meant running from himself. To make this new Overwatch better—to make things right—he had to be honest with his team and himself.” These changes would go live today, 26th October 2022.

• The primary reason for this change to come into immediate effect is because Blizzard formerly named the character soon after the Diablo 4 Leading Level Designer, namely Jesse McCree. He is one of the Blizzard staff in the “Cosby Suite” controversy.
• The former Activision-Blizzard employee after whom the character was named was implicated in a sexual harassment lawsuit. Players then demanded that the hero’s name be changed; it cannot be after a person involved in a sexual harassment lawsuit.
• Post this controversy, Overwatch streamers consciously began to stop the usage of the character’s name. In August, Blizzard announced that they had paved plans to change the name of the character.
• Additionally, Blizzard also announced that they would no longer be naming the game’s characters after their employees.
