Digital Foundry has come out with a new video, demonstrating the SSD options available for the PS 5. Sony’s latest PS 5 update just came out last week, giving players the ability to expand their M.2 storage bay. The internal 667GB limitation is considered a thing of the past since games can be run from any PCIe Gen 4.0 drive.
While Sony has made its recommendations for SSDs, Digital Foundry have shown that even the absolute slowest PCIe Gen 4.0 drive works almost perfectly. For example, Western Digital SN750 SE does not meet the recommended specs.
Sony recommends SSDs with a read bandwidth of 5500 GB/s, while the SN750 SE’s capacity is at 3500 GB/s. It also depends on the PC RAM to speed up file operations, a function that is incompatible with the PlayStation.
“Slowest PS5 SSD”
Insomniac Games, the developer of Ratchet and Clank, had insisted that Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart would not be compatible with the previous generation consoles with their traditional hard drive tech since the game had dimension-hopping gameplay. This served as a promoter of the PS 5’s power. Digital Foundry has now broken new ground, demonstrating that Ratchet and Clank run almost perfectly with Western Digital’s SN750 SE.
- Digital Foundry also tested the SN750 SE in two other aspects. They tried to copy files from the internal SSD, for which it took 10 times more time than the WD SN850.
- Second, they tried to load an existing Cyberpunk 2077 save, with the SN750 SE barely winning out over the PS 5’s internal SSD, but this can be attributed to the known issues between the game itself and the internal SSD.
- This does not mean that Digital Foundry has quashed the claims by Insomniac Games. It just means that even Sony developers such as Insomniac have just scratched the surface of the PS5’s hardware potential. As newer, enhanced games begin releasing, it can soon become a necessity to expand storage as faster storage access might become a requirement.
- While the expansion of the storage might not be as easy as on an Xbox Series X, players can be sure that in-game performance is not going to be affected, no matter which SSD they use.
