If we’re talking about boy bands, there will always be a group that wouldn’t miss the party. Debuting in June 2013, Bangtan Sonyeondan, popularly known as BTS, made its name shine throughout the globe as the years go by. The seven-member boy group from South Korea has its names tied to streaming platforms, music charts, award shows, and such. We’ll introduce you to Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkook. And what sets them apart from other boy bands? Stay with us here!
10. Their Journey
Well, this would make them different from other boy bands who started with known and huge companies. BTS came from a starting, unknown company way back. Their humble beginnings are from having no budget for promotional activities and music videos to being the biggest star right now.
Oh, imagine the ladder they have climbed to get to this. They deserve and worked to get where they are right now, and their fans couldn’t be prouder!
9. Stable fanbase
Speaking of fans, part of the success of a group is the people supporting them. Their fanbase, the ARMY, has been at the back of the BTS ever since its debut. Many may have come and gone, but never once did BTS find themselves alone.
The passion and dedication of their fans to support them in voting, buying their albums, and simply enjoying their music made the group larger than ever. With the rapid increase of the number of ARMYs all around the world, BTS is nearing to be the most successful South Korean act worldwide.
8. Hip-Hop beginnings
If you’ve become an ARMY recently, you may haven’t heard them during their hip-hop debut days. The boys started their Kpop career with their debut song ‘No More Dream‘ in 2013.
Even if at that time, netizens are more tuned into the Pop genre, their music made its way to K-Hip-hop and the success from that certainly created more.
7. Their rapping
While we’re on this subject of Hip-hop, I can say that BTS has one of the strongest rapline among the boy bands. Especially with RM and Suga who started with underground activities, hence the knowledge and background in Hip-hop.
Do I even have to explain why? RM, Suga, and J-Hope are one of the strongest – if not the strongest – raplines in the Kpop act.
The lyrics of their raps are written too well, and maybe you can check out BTS’ Cypher Parts 1, 2, and 3, and let us know your thoughts! Oh, check out Ma City here, and then the rapline’s 땡 on Soundcloud here!
6. Song lyrics
Okay, we know that many bands have been particular in writing their lyrics perfectly. But we’ll add this here as one of the unique qualities of Bangtan Sonyeondan.
- They do share their raw feelings with the lyrics of the songs they release.
- Whether Hip-hop, Pop, or any genre, their lyrics would always express what they want the listeners to feel.
If you wanted to feel the raw emotions with the lyrics they write, here’s what I am talking about. Listen to their Spring Day song on their album You Never Walk Alone.
Check out the translated English lyrics to understand the song better. This is about the tragic 2014 Sewol ferry incident in South Korea, for those who didn’t know.
5. Their creative process and production
Many boy bands produce and get involved in the creative process of their songs, BTS as well. The majority of their songs since their debut involved the members. Special mention to their OG producers, RM and Suga (yes, their rappers!) for gaining recognition as producers.
They work hand in hand with Korean producers, of course! The other members have a fair share of writing credits on their whole discography. We can say that the group is hands-on with the material they are releasing.
4. The BTS trilogies
Oh, this is exciting! Bangtan Sonyeondan loves creating trilogies. They have this concept called School (or Skool) Trilogy which consists of their 2013 debut album 2Cool 4Skool, on the same year O!RUL,2?, and concluded with Skool Luv Affair in 2014.
This tackles their struggles as students, by the way.
Let’s jump to another trilogy from BTS way back from 2015 to 2016, The Most Beautiful Moment in Life Part 1, Part 2, and Epilogue albums. This trilogy talks about their experiences in their young adult years.
3. They are real
Authenticity comes a long way when you’re in an industry where people look up to you. And BTS is just that.
On or off camera, you can expect them to be themselves, nothing more (except when they perform on stage, they are all out!) and nothing less.
In case you have missed their documentary series, Break the Silence, check out the trailer here!
2. Their social awareness
Oh, this is something we can say is a unique quality of Bangtan Sonyeondan. Yes, there are artists and boy bands who are equally aware of social happenings, but they do speak out about it.
- In 2017, they teamed up with UNICEF for a global campaign with the tagline love yourself, which speaks about the group’s identity as well.
- They speak about awareness of mental health as they were invited to United Nations General Assembly in New York.
- The group members actively donate to campaigns, including the #BlackLivesMatter movement.
1. BTS is family
As they take on the bigger roles of ARMY’s idols and one of the world’s biggest boy bands, they have been there for each other. Having the majority of their lives being together, watching the seven members feels like a warm home to its fans.
Their dynamic bond makes the group stronger, and the challenges make them closer. Each member’s chemistry is too loving to see on and off camera. As they continue to bring people together, they continuously have each other’s sides and backs.
Then, there you have it, ARMYs! Send love to the members, Namjoon, Seokjin, Yoongi, Hoseok, Jimin, Taehyung, and Jungkook! Purple hearts for you!
