Redfall Is it Worth it - Featured

Redfall is the latest co-op shooter game from developer Arkane Studios and publisher Bethesda Softworks. In the game, players can control one of the four characters on a mission to fight against the bloodthirsty vampires that have taken over a fictional town in Massachusetts. Now that the game has officially been released to the public, many gamers are torn on whether they should get it. With all these reviews coming out, is Redfall worth it or not?

Is Redfall worth it?

On May 2, 2023, Redfall was released on the Xbox Series X|S and Windows. Although there was hype surrounding the game when it was first announced, many gamers are having second thoughts now that we’ve finally gotten a better look at Redfall. First announced back in 2021, the game faced many hurdles before its release.

  • Last May 2022, Arkane announced that they decided to delay Redfall’s release. The studio believed this was their “most ambitious” project yet, so it gave us hope that it would be mindblowing at release.
  • Unfortunately, Arkane and Bethesda did not live up to the hype surrounding Redfall. Following its release, many gamers and critics have come out with their reviews of the vampire shooter game.
  • As of writing, Redfall currently holds a 64 Metascore on Metacritic. This is based on 28 critic reviews. Although there are positive reviews, they’re not enough to raise Redfall’s score.
  • Of the 28 critic reviews, 18 are Mixed, while 4 are Negative. Most reviews with these scores share one thought: Redfall does not look like it’s worth it.

Redfall has concerning performance issues

Even though it was released on Xbox Series X|S, both current-gen consoles, Redfall is locked at 30 frames per second. This disappointed many because one would expect that an AAA game such as Redfall wouldn’t have any problems with graphics or performance. Unfortunately, gamers will have to deal with it as there is currently no option to optimize the game or run it at 60 FPS.

One of the clips we’ve seen on Twitter shows an enemy casually and smoothly floating down some metal stairs. Although this is funny, it raises concerns about how Arkane and Bethesda handled Redfall’s development. Other reviewers and critics also raised the same point. Most of them thought that the developers may have rushed Redfall’s release.

Another reviewer who accidentally published their review early shared a clip of disappointing performance issues from Redfall. In the clip, we see that most of the rooms don’t have any life to them. It also featured AI-controlled enemies that were too easy to deal with and didn’t put up much of a fight.

The game gets repetitive and boring along the way

The most common thought shared by reviewers is that Redfall gets boring along the way. It doesn’t have a gripping story that will leave you wanting to finish the game after each mission. If you wish to buy Redfall because of its single-player campaign, then it’s time to think twice about it.

The most enjoyable part of the vampire shooter is its co-op mode. However, some players also ran into trouble with this feature, as they cannot enter matchmaking with other players in Redfall. As of writing, Redfall currently holds a “Mostly Negative” rating on Steam. If you look at the game’s official Steam page, you’d see that most user reviews do not recommend getting Redfall.

Our verdict: Redfall is not worth it

With all these issues surrounding Redfall’s gameplay and performance coming out, it certainly looks like the $70 price tag on the game is not worth it. If you already have the Xbox Game Pass, you can experience what Redfall is all about and see whether or not it will live up to your standards.

However, if you want to buy the game, we highly suggest thinking twice or even thrice before doing so. The game looked rather promising in the gameplay and teaser trailers we’ve gotten over the past years. Now that it’s finally here, it was a major letdown for those who looked forward to it.

It may be worth it if Arkane and Bethesda find a way to work through the issues and improve Redfall. However, we’re all better off playing Dead Island 2 if we want to hack and slash some supernatural beings — with or without our friends.

Redfall is now available on the Xbox Series X|S and Windows. You can get the game at no additional cost if you are subscribed to the Xbox Game Pass. What did you think of Bethesda’s latest release?
