Search continues as 2 IU students go missing at Monroe Lake, exploring what really happened

DNR is searching for missing IU students at Lake Monroe

The search continues for the two Indiana University students who went missing at Monroe Lake on Saturday, April 15, 2023. Authorities used speedboats and scuba divers to look for the two students. However, they had to halt the operation after sunset on Saturday due to darkness.

Siddhant Shah, 19, and Aryan Vaidya, 20, went to the lake with their friends on a pontoon boat. They anchored the boat and decided to go for a swim but didn’t resurface. Their companions tried to find them underwater but were unable to do so.

The friends of the two students have been transported to IU’s campus. Meanwhile, the university has released a statement regarding the incident which reads:

“We are deeply saddened by the news that Siddhant Shah and Aryan Vaidya, both students in the Kelley School of Business, are currently missing at Lake Monroe.”

According to reports, the boys might not have been wearing life vests on the boat. It has also been mentioned that alcohol bottles were present on the boat. However, it is still unclear whether the students consumed alcohol around the time of their disappearance.

Lieutenant Angela Goldman of the DNR said that bad weather has made the lake dangerous. Strong winds are causing the water to create waves that interfere with the sonar searching equipment, making it even more difficult to capture a clear picture of the lake.

Other agencies helping in the search operation at Lake Monroe include the Bloomington Police Department, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Monroe Fire Protection District, Monroe County Dive Team, IU Police Department, IU Dean of Student Office, and IU Health EMS.

Authorities are looking at all possible angles for the students’ disappearance. They are questioning the families of the missing students in hopes of finding more leads. Aryan Vaidya is from Ohio, while Siddhant Shah is an international student.

According to Monroe Lake safety regulations, boating and swimming are allowed in the lake, but with precautions. The water reservoir is located approximately 10 miles southeast of Bloomington, Indiana, in the United States. It covers an area of 10,750 acres and may contain anywhere from 292 gigalitres to 428 gigalitres of water.
