Officials have reported that a tiger shark attack happened in the Red Sea in Egypt, resulting in the death of a Russian man. Authorities have declared a 74-kilometer (46-mile) section of the coastline as temporarily off-limits. The shark attack happened on Thursday, according to the Environment Ministry. Shark Attack incident takes place in Egyptian Resort in Hurghada
The attack happened in the waters near the city of Hurghada on Thursday, 8th June 2023.
- In the video that’s now going viral, a man is seen being circled by a tiger shark. Moments later, the man is dragged under the water as he tries to call out for help and escape.
- Alarms can be heard in the background as the shark attacks its victim.
- However, no coast guard arrived before and during the attack.
- A boat only arrived after the shark had successfully dragged the man’s body underwater. Unfortunately, for all parties involved, it was too late.

- Screams calling out “Papa!” can be heard in the video as the victim repeatedly tries to fight off the shark, but a witness can be heard claiming, “It is eating his remains now” later in the video shared by Twitter user @Alphafox78.
Details about the Victim in the video
Russian Consul-General Viktor Voropayev stated to the state-run TASS news agency that he had received confirmation from the Egyptian authorities that the victim in the video was a 1999-born Russian national.
- Authorities have not disclosed the name of the victim.
- They have also confirmed that the victim was not a tourist. Rather, he was an Egyptian resident who was originally born in Russia.
- He came to visit the beach with his father. In a tragic turn of events, the father saw the predator brutally attack his son.
Did they catch the tiger shark?
Later, the Egyptian environment ministry announced that they had captured the shark and would study it in a lab to understand the circumstances surrounding the unusual assault. Social media users posted pictures of the shark’s lifeless body resting on a sheet on shore. The officials do not confirm that the shark in the tweet is the same shark responsible for the attack.
Actions by the Authorities following the attack
A 74-kilometer (46-mile) section of the coastline has been declared off-limits by the authorities. They have prohibited any activities such as swimming, snorkeling, and other water sports until Sunday. The ministry would further investigate the presence of any other sharks in the region.
The authorities have claimed this to be a rare shark attack. However, this is the third shark attack in the Red Sea since 2022, leading to death.
The International Shark Attack File lists tiger sharks as one of the species most frequently involved in unprovoked attacks on people. Tiger sharks are a big species that live in tropical and temperate environments.
