Hardcore RPG gamers can only call themselves that if they’ve already checked out Konami’s Suikoden series. There are a total of five games so far in the Suikoden series. Of course, there’s bound to be one title better than the other, but Konami releasing a remastered version of Suikoden 1 & 2 is a step in the right direction.

Konami reveals all the new things coming to Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster

The full title of this upcoming release is Suikoden I&II HD Remaster Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars. We know, we know. It’s quite a mouthful to say so let’s just stick to Suikoden 1 & 2, yes?

The remastered versions of Suikoden 1 & 2 include a number of improvements, according to Konami. Both titles were released way back in the 90s and it’s only fitting that they modernize a few features in the game.

Before we get into it, check out the trailer which premiered at Konami’s showcase.

What’s new in the HD Remasters?

Here are the highlights of what players can expect in the Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster coming soon:

  • All background illustrations have been upgraded to HD
  • Updated effects breathe new life into the pixel art animation
  • New environmental sounds effects to immerse yourself in this fantasy world
  • Battle SFX are also now HD and add a new level of realism
  • Newly added auto-save
  • Battle Fast Forward
  • Conversation Log

Updated graphics

Konami is not changing the art style of Suikoden, but they did add depth to the pixel graphics to make the game’s visuals come alive. The official Twitter account posted a side-by-side comparison of the original Suikoden’s visuals to the remastered one.

Junko Kawano also worked on the character portraits for the Suikoden remaster, making them HD and better than ever. Longtime Suikoden fans would recognize Kawano as the artist who was in charge of character design in the first Suikoden game released in 1995.

Quality of Life improvements

Aside from updating the graphics, Konami is also modernizing the gameplay in Suikoden 1 & 2 by introducing new features such as auto-battle and auto-save.

  • The ‘Battle Fast Forward’ feature is also being added to Suikoden 1 & 2. In our opinion, this is a must-have for any RPG nowadays given that some battles may drag out longer than usual.
  • Konami also aims to make the games as immersive as possible with the changes they made to the game’s Sound.
    • Environmental sounds are added to Suikoden 1 & 2, meaning players get to hear things like footsteps and the wind blowing.
    • The battle sounds are in high definition to make players feel more immersed in the gameplay.

Suikoden 1 & 2 release date and platforms

There have been no details from Konami about a specific release date, just that players can expect it sometime in 2023. The good news is Suikoden 1 & 2 Remaster will be available on different platforms once it’s released next year.

  • PlayStation 4
  • Xbox One
  • Nintendo Switch
  • PC via Steam

If you have current-gen consoles such as the PS5 or the Xbox Series X|S, you can still play Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster through backward compatibility.

Can I purchase both games separately?

Konami has not shared more information about whether or not you can buy the games separately. For now, it’s looking like Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster will be bundled into one.

This decision may be to see if the hype for Suikoden is still alive.

A former employee for Konami encouraged their followers on Twitter to support the remasters once they come out since this may determine the fate of Suikoden.

One thing’s for sure – Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster are already two of the most anticipated releases next year. Everything we know about the Suikoden remasters coming our way soon is definitely hyping us up.
