The Summer Game Fest started as a surprise, unveiling Ubisoft’s new 2D side scroller Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. This is the first game of the series releasing in over a decade. However, what’s notable is that, in terms of gameplay, it goes back to it’s roots in the 90s when they used to be platformers. This has caused disappointment among the fans who were expecting the game to follow it’s 2000s variations as a third person action RPG. But the old school fans welcome this change and are visibly excited about the release of the game. Take a peek at the reveal trailer and see what’s in store for you with new gameplay and story in Ubisoft’s new Prince of Persia game.
Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown – Gameplay and Story
Gameplay
From the trailer, we can make out the game to be a traditional Metroidvania. This new Prince of Persia is turning towards the old days, when the first two instalments of the series were nothing more than pixelated 2D side scrollers.
As shown, we can expect fast paced hack and slash combat with challenging vertical and horizontal platforming.
- The player wields double swords along with a bow and arrow as part of the arsenal.
- You can purchase and equip amulets to gain skills and powerups.
- The game boasts flashy and vibrant visuals which might appeal to many modern day gamers.
Story
Lore wise, the central character is a warrior named Sargon, who is part of a group known as ‘The Immmortals’ setting out on a rescue mission to save kidnapped Prince Gasan. He will journey across treacherous land, uncover mysteries of Mount Qaf, fight a series of mythological creatures and race against time to accomplish his purpose. The plot is of course set in a fictional world closely resembling Persia.
Why Fans are Skeptical
The hardcore Prince of Persia generation that grew up on The Sands of Time, Warrior Within and Forgotten Sands are not too happy with the reveal of the title. These might be the reasons responsible for disappointment among the fans.

- A Metroidvania cannot immerse the player into it’s lore as a third person action RPG does.
- The showcase of hip hop beats along with the deviation from original art style does not amuse a section of the fans.
- There were expectations regarding a Sands of Time remake since it’s been a long time with no recent news of that project. There is a high chance that the plan of a remake is already being scrapped.
However, in our opinion we should not write the game off just because of initial reactions to the gameplay teaser. We should wait for its release to judge it.
Platforms and Release Date
The Lost Crown is under development by the same team at Ubisoft Montpellier who were behind Rayman Legends. We can expect some marks of the highly challenging platformer in this game as well.
British composer Gareth Coker is in charge of the soundtracks for the game. To know more about it, check in for Ubisoft Forward on June 12th, 2023 at 12:45 pm EDT.
