Valorant Champions 2022: Did Killjoy kill the fun at the controversial XSET v FPX match?

The final match between XSET and FunPlus Phoenix (FPX) during the Valorant Champions 2022 caused quite the controversy thanks to Killjoy. Due to a bug that caused Killjoy’s turret to fire in the wrong direction, Riot called for a replay of XSET and FPX’s final round.

Pro players who tuned in to watch the do-or-die match between XSET and FPX shared their thoughts about the situation.

  • Most of them disagree with the replay decision while players from FPX questioned the competitive integrity of the VCTs 2022.
  • This decision also has Riot under fire as Valorant enthusiasts say this was a wrong call on the organizer’s part.

Killjoy’s turret bug caused quite the controversy at the Valorant Champions Tour 2022

During the lower bracket match earlier between XSET and FPX, a known bug in Killjoy’s turret affected the match at the Valorant Champions Tour 2022. In this part of the match, XSET had to defend while FPX pushed into the A site.

As the Omen from FPX jiggle peeked from the A Tree, Killjoy’s turret started firing in the wrong direction. This caused miscommunication between XSET players as they thought the Attackers were pushing from Heaven.

Because of the miscommunication caused by the Killjoy turret bug, FPX was able to clutch the round. They finished with a strong 13-11 win over XSET and since this was a lower bracket match, XSET bid goodbye to their VCT title dreams.

Once the match ended and both teams were preparing for the post-match conferences, conversations about the turret bug started online. Some NA fans pointed out that Killjoy’s turret cost XSET the game while some pro players took notice of the turret bug.

Riot decided to have both teams play the last around again because of the Killjoy bug

The announcement which came from Riot following the match dampened the spirits of FPX players. Before they could head to the post-match conferences, Riot called them back to the stage for a re-do of the last round.

The scores for both teams went back to 12-11 as FPX maintained the single lead over XSET. As for the weapons used, Riot ensured that both teams used the same loadout they had in the original bugged round.

Since this was a chance to redeem themselves from their loss, XSET used a different strategy this time. This strategy effectively took FPX by surprise and because of that, the game went into overtime.

  • FPX were quick to recover anyway and they ended up winning the series once more.
  • This time, they ended at 16-14 on the Ascent map.

Although FPX secured their slot in the tournament again, it’s understandable why some players from the team felt disappointed.

According to FPX player Kyrylo “ANGE1” Karasov, the replay “ruined competitive integrity”. He continued to express his frustration at the decision because the Killjoy bug was not their fault. It’s not our fault. We shouldn’t be involved in this,” ANGE1 added.

Since release, there has always been a bug with Killjoy’s turret in Valorant

Anyone who’s ever played as Killjoy knows that the turret bug is part of the game at this point.

  • Ever since Valorant launched, the bug has been present and Riot has not made any adjustments to it whatsoever.
  • If a player jiggle peeks an area where the turret is facing, it starts shooting at the wrong spot.

It’s only valid for FPX players to be frustrated at the decision to re-do the round because of something out of their control. If XSET ended up winning in that overtime, we can only imagine how heartbreaking it would be for FPX.

At the end of the day, this was solely Riot’s decision. According to XSET coach Don “Syyko” Muir, they weren’t the ones who asked for the round to be replayed.

With this win, FPX moves on to play DRX in their next scheduled match. We can only hope that this is the last time something like this happens at a big event such as the Valorant Champions Tour.

GGs, XSET!
