An award-winning video game composer is under fire after they attended the Game Developers Conference. Gamers called out composer Chel Wong after finding out she went to the GDC while positive for COVID-19. Read on to find out more about this story.
Gaming Twitter was calling out a COVID-positive individual who attended the GDC
Before Chel Wong admitted to being this person, the gaming community was subtweeting about someone in attendance at the GDC. According to tweets from various video game specialists/writers, “someone who tested positive for COVID twice” attended the GDC. Moreover, some Twitter users claim that this person went to the GDC “and couldn’t even be bothered to wear a mask.”
Some users had no clue who these video game specialists were talking about since they refused to name the individual. But of course, the truth was bound to come out. Chel Wong may have realized this as she posted an apology video on April 5, 2022.

In her apology video, Wong talked about how she had two separate COVID-19 tests. But even though both came back positive, she still decided to attend the GDC. Moreover, she went to Yerba Buena Gardens. So going back to the tweets calling her out, they share how Wong chose to socialize with others as if she didn’t have COVID-19.
“I took a risk because it was an open-air area and I was double-masked and socially distant, but that does not matter. That was unfair to those around me. It was selfish, and I am so sorry that I didn’t prioritize people’s well-being. In the future, I will always prioritize the health of those around me instead of parking or making excuses.”
Furthermore, Wong shares that people are “saying a lot of terrifying things” directed toward her after this controversy broke out. However, there were those who defended Wong’s actions. They explained that if you take the risk of attending a public event, there’s a chance you’ll get the virus.
But even so, other users pointed out that Wong had the knowledge that she was positive yet still made the decision to interact with others.
I'll be going dark again but I stepped down from all my panels and will not be attending PAX. I will also not be attending any networking events for a while.
I am really sorry.
