• In the short video the user states, “Starting February 1st, Walmart is going to charge you a dollar to take out their carts. That’s fun.” The video currently garnered 10.7 million views.

• As you can see in the TikTok post, the dollar sign Walmart shopping cart can be seen on the handle. If we take a good look into it, the $1 should be a deposit to use the cart and would be refunded after its use.

Is it true?

A news outlet called Snopes reached out to Walmart to know the truth. To answer the question, no, Walmart would not be charging $1 to use their shopping carts.

• In the statement from Walmart, they mentioned that the video posted on the social media platform is not from the US. “The clip is from a Walmart Canada store,” the statement read.

If you’re curious now about how this dollar deposit works, it’s easy. All you have to do is ready a $1, or a loonie to use the carts.

• You may insert the coin into the device to unlock the cart. You can only move the shopping cart from the corral once you deposit the coin.
• Oh, don’t worry, you can still get your loonie. Once you return the shopping cart to the corral and lock it, your $1 can be refunded.

Will the US stores use this?

As of this moment, Walmart has not advised the coming of deposit carts in the US. But if you want to try these carts, then head over to ALDI.

• According to ALDI’s website, the quarter deposit helps them as they have limited staff in their stores to gather grocery carts left around.
• “This 25 cent deposit ultimately saves our customers money because we don’t have to hire extra staff to collect grocery carts. To unlock a cart, customers have to insert a quarter, and this deposit ensures shoppers return their cart to the corral to get their quarter back.”
