The Legend of Zelda: Master Collection Brings 40 Years of Hyrule to Trading Cards
Nintendo is continuing to celebrate one of its most recognisable franchises with collectibles that reach beyond traditional gaming releases. The Legend of Zelda turned 40 this year, creating plenty of opportunities to revisit characters and artwork spanning decades of adventures.
Merchandise has become a major part of the anniversary, ranging from amiibo and LEGO sets to other products aimed at longtime fans. Now, Nintendo is taking the series into another corner of entertainment with an official trading card collection.
Key Takeaways
Nintendo and Panini are releasing The Legend of Zelda: Master Collection, a trading card set celebrating the franchise’s 40th anniversary with artwork spanning its history.
- The Legend of Zelda: Master Collection, a trading card set by Panini, is being released to commemorate the franchise’s 40th anniversary, featuring artwork from across its decades of games.
- The collection will include cards representing at least 11 different Legend of Zelda titles, from the original game to newer releases like Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, with a dedicated album also planned for collectors.
- Details regarding the release date, price, total number of cards, and international availability for the Master Collection remain unconfirmed by Nintendo and Panini.
Zelda cards revealed
Nintendo has partnered with Italian collectibles company Panini to create The Legend of Zelda: Master Collection. The trading card set was first revealed during the European version of the Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct in September, while viewers of the North American presentation did not see the announcement.
Panini later provided a clearer look at the collection, showing a Master Collection box alongside four cards and a dedicated album. Artwork displayed so far draws from different periods of Zelda history, giving collectors a glimpse at how the series has evolved alongside broader gaming trends.
Based on what has been revealed so far, the collection appears focused on artwork and collecting. The cards turn decades of game development into a visual retrospective that fans can collect outside Nintendo’s consoles.
Eleven games spotted
At least 11 Zelda games can currently be identified from the artwork revealed by Nintendo and Panini. They include the original The Legend of Zelda, A Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask, The Wind Waker, Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword.
Newer adventures are represented as well, including Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom, Echoes of Wisdom and the Link’s Awakening remake. Early card imagery has specifically shown Link from Tears of the Kingdom, Zelda from Skyward Sword and a scene from Ocarina of Time.
Some reports say every mainline title will be represented, although Panini has not publicly confirmed the complete lineup. More games could therefore be included beyond those currently visible.
Collector album planned
Alongside the cards, Panini is preparing a special album designed to hold the collection. Its black exterior features gold Zelda branding and an elastic closure, giving collectors a dedicated place to organise their cards. Packaging takes a different approach, using white and gold alongside several versions of Link and subtle Hyrule map details.
Such anniversary products reflect gaming industry innovations that increasingly extend major franchises into collectibles and other merchandise. Physical items have also become a noticeable part of current gaming trends, giving publishers another way to celebrate established series beyond new software.
Release date and price remain unknown
Several important questions remain unanswered despite the latest reveal. Nintendo and Panini have yet to announce a release date, price, total card count or full list of markets where the Master Collection will be sold. Pack sizes are similarly unconfirmed, so estimates based on previous Panini products should not be treated as official specifications.
Availability outside Europe also remains unclear after the collection initially appeared only during the European anniversary presentation. Fans will consequently have to wait for Panini or Nintendo to provide the remaining details. With Zelda’s 40th anniversary celebrations already spanning toys, LEGO and other collectibles, the Master Collection adds another way for gaming fans to revisit four decades of Hyrule.
