PS4-exclusive Horizon Zero Dawn is a crowning achievement of developer Guerrilla Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment. Released way back in 2017, it served as a defining fresh IP for Sony’s eighth generation of consoles.
But according to Kotaku’s Jason Schreier, this gem of a PS4 exclusive title may soon be headed towards PC, making it the only first-party title to ship on to other platforms.
Now, Horizon Zero Dawn has received widespread critical acclaim and has been a commercial success for Sony with more than 10 million copies sold so far. Sony bringing its one of the biggest first-party titles to another platform may seem outright confusing, keeping in mind the non-flexible nature of this Japanese tech giant.
Fortunately, there’s more to it then it meets the eye and if anything, bringing Horizon Zero Dawn to PC three years after its initial launch seems like a pretty great idea.
The PS5 is right around the corner and there’s no doubt that Guerrilla Games are working on the sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn, which (Spoiler Alert) may have ended up teasing the storyline for an inevitable sequel.
Now, Guerrilla Games have known to develop launch titles for Sony’s console to showcase the immense graphical fidelity the system can support. This was evident in Killzone Shadowfall which was a graphical powerhouse, alongside Horizon Zero Dawn.
It’s not difficult to assume that a sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn may very well serve as the launch title for Sony’s PS5. Seeing the fan following the title has garnished in the last few years it won’t be surprising to see people buying a PS5 for this upcoming sequel.
Love or hate them, Sony’s first-party titles have the attention of the entire video game industry, whether its the Xbox, PC or the Nintendo fans. And so there are a lot of people who admire Horizon Zero Dawn but never got around to play this since they play games on a different platform such as PC.
Releasing Horizon Zero Dawn (which has already sold millions of copies on its home system and is currently available at $9.99) on a new platform at a full price three years later seems like a economically viable move by Sony as it not just caters to a brand new audience but also solidifies their chances of getting these small chunks of audience to buy a PS5 in the near future.
Think of Horizon Zero Dawn as one of the best variants of a pastry in the baker’s shop. The baker being Sony Interactive Entertainment. Now the baker is offering you that pastry for free to get a sense of the quality and flavor of his shop. The only difference between the baker and Sony is that Sony will sell Horizon Zero Dawn at full price on PC but will still garnish an equal amount of attention and hence make them profit.
Moreover, releasing Horizon Zero Dawn seems plausible as we know that Decima Engine can develop titles for PC. Death Stranding, which was also developed on the same game engine is headed to PC later this year. Also being a new IP, it will be more accessible to the PC users in contrast to other titles such as God of War or Uncharted 4, which were sequels of the titles that also released on the PS3.
Good times are ahead of us. If Horizon Zero Dawn is really coming to PC, there are a lot of users who would love to experience the gripping tale of Aloy, explore its gorgeous open world( now in 4K and 60 FPS) and engage in its fluid range combat which will become more interesting with the addition of mouse and keyboard support.
Whatsoever be the case, we may be hearing about this as well as the highly anticipated PS5 reveal in the coming few weeks.
