NBA: Spurs wants Victor Wembanyama to play power forward, not center | Here’s why

Victor Wembanyama not playing in the summer league

Wait, what? At 7-foot-4, it’s kind of odd that the San Antonio Spurs want their first overall pick, Victor Wembanyama, to start the 2023-2024 season as a power forward rather than a center. Well, the organization had some explanation. Here’s why the Spurs want Wemby to play a different position in his rookie year.

Why is Wembanyama playing power forward?

According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, the Spurs are expected to make Victor Wembanyama the team’s starting power forward.

“Wembanyama’s a player that’s going to have generational ability in the league. Expect him to play power forward, the four position, to start off his NBA career, and the Spurs will look for Zach Collins to be a guy to provide size next to Victor Wembanyama in the front court.”

The 19-year-old prodigy will be the 4, while Zach Collins will be at the 5. This isn’t exactly new information as Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich has always wanted Collins to be the starting center. With Wemby at the 4, this could mean he has the freedom to maybe run the offense. Although Keldon Johnson has been the team’s best player so far, but Wembanyama is a generational talent. Moreover, the Spurs obviously want to protect Wembanyama and preserve his health and body early in his career. By shying away from the center position, he could be away from being bodied by star big men like Nikola Jokic, Joel Embiid, Rudy Gobert, Bam Adebayo, and more.

Before joining the NBA, Wembanyama played exceptionally for the Mets 92 in France. In 34 games, the basketball sensation was averaging 21.6 points, 10.4 rebounds, and 2.4 assists while also swatting away 3.0 shots per game.

Breaking: LeBron James wants to commit to Team USA for the 2024 Paris Olympics; Plans on leading a team that has Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant

After a subtle hint of possibly joining Team USA in the 2024 Olympics, LeBron James now has confirmed he is considering representing the United States once again in Paris, France.

After seeing Team USA fail to capture even the Bronze medal in the 2023 FIBA World Cup, LeBron seems to be forming the Redeem Team 2.0

According to NBA insider Shams Charania and the Athletic, LeBron wants to suit up for the USA in the 2024 Paris Olympics. Moreover, LeGM is already working his magic with NBA superstars. LeBron, as always, has reportedly talked to multiple stars like Steph Curry, Kevin Durant, and even his Los Angeles Lakers teammate Anthony Davis. Other names like Kyrie Irving, Damian Lillard, Devin Booker, Jayson Tatum, De’Aaron Fox, Draymond Green, and Bam Adebayo are also heavily considering teaming up with LBJ.

This LeBron James-led Team USA would be a remarkable comeback for the American team after a disappointing World Cup run

LeBron, 38, has already participated in three Team USA Olympics tours, wherein he won two golds (2008,2012) and a bronze medal (2004) for his country. With LeBron, Steph, and KD banding together against the world, do you think there’s a good enough country that can beat this new Team USA? Add Joel Embiid (if he chooses the USA) to the equation, this squad may even top the 1992 Dream Team.

After the 2023 playoffs, LBJ thought of possibly retiring from basketball. Fortunately, he chose to stay. James is currently entering his 21st NBA season. At 38 years old, James hasn’t slowed down one bit. Argued by many as The Greatest of All Time, LeBron is still a force to reckon with. If he joins Team USA, James will be 39 years old by the start of the 2024 Olympics. This will be his fourth and possibly last Olympic appearance. By the 2028 Olympics, LeBron may have probably retired from basketball. Although the four-time MVP wants to keep playing until he shares the court with his sons (Bronny and Bryce), father time is slowly catching up to one of the best NBA players in history.
