Barbie nearly hits its ‘Barbillion’ mark in global box office | Can you stream it online?

There’s no stopping Barbie as Mattel’s iconic ‘pink’ movie is all set to make a billion dollars at the global box office. The film’s success has redefined the landscape of studio blockbusters as superhero fatigue finally feels like a real thing. Now, there is still a majority of fans who haven’t watched the Greta Gerwig blockbuster yet, which begs the question: can you stream it online? Barbie nears $1 billion mark at the box office

As of August 3, Barbie has grossed more than $823 million at the worldwide box office, with $394 million from the domestic market and $429 million internationally. It’s been just 13 days since the movie was released on July 21 alongside Oppenheimer.

According to box office trackers like BoxOfficeMojo, Barbie is just around $170 million short of reaching the monumental $1 billion mark. This shouldn’t be an issue since the film made nearly the same amount of money in its opening weekend alone. 

Alongside Avatar: The Way of Water, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Top Gun: Maverick, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and Jurassic World Dominion, Barbie will join the exclusive list of movies to earn a billion dollars at the box office in the post-pandemic era.

Old rivals like Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One and Oppenheimer, as well as upcoming competition from Meg 2: The Trench and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, should not really be an issue for Barbie to reach the Barbillion mark. 

Can you stream Barbie online?

Given that Warner Bros produce Barbie, the movie will stream on the parent company’s streaming service HBO’s Max. However, given the movie’s massive success in theaters, the streaming release date seems far away and uncertain at this point.

Max welcomed two new movies to its streaming slate – Evil Dead Rise and Shazam! Fury of the Gods – both available at 63 and 67 days, respectively, since they were released in theaters. However, both films’ box office earnings pale in comparison to Barbie.

If Warner Bros continues to follow their two-month pattern, Barbie will be available for streaming on Max roughly by this fall. Until then, you can enjoy the movie in theaters all around the world. 

In fact, Barbie was just cleared for release in the United Arab Emirates on August 31. Due to its initial delay, fans had to travel to nearby countries to watch the film. 

Barbie’s increasing global popularity

The hype around Barbie existed even before the movie was first announced. Fans were excited about their favorite Mattel doll getting her own film franchise.

When Greta Gerwig was announced to direct the film starring Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, the buzz skyrocketed. The film addresses themes like existentialism from a feminist point-of-view with a lot of meta-humor. 

Adding to this, the movie’s simultaneous release with the contrasting Oppenheimer sparked the online phenomenon called Barbenheimer. Barbie has a 7.4 score on IMDb and 88% on Rotten Tomatoes.
