“Yibambe!”. EA is brewing something big this year! According to a report by gaming insider Jeff Grubb, EA is developing a single-player, open-world Black Panther game. During a podcast by the Giant Bomb’s Game Mess Mornings show, insider Jeff Grubb shared that the project is called “Project Rainier”. He also added a brief description of the game saying,
“It is a single-player game. It is in very early development. The game starts with Black Panther being dead, and the player is going to take on the challenges of becoming the new Black Panther, and that seems to be the setup for the game.”

The project is reportedly led by Kevin Stephens, former Vice President at Monolith Studios responsible for huge projects like Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor and its sequel, Shadow War. As the story goes for this upcoming huge open-world title, the game will let you take on the mantle as the new Black Panther after the previous bearer has died.
According to Grubb, “Project Rainier” may also be pertaining to a mountain range in the state of Washington. Coincidentally, Electronic Arts (EA) created a new development team in Seattle (Washington) which only suggests that the game is currently being developed in the same state.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever versus the upcoming AAA Black Panther title
The official trailer for the upcoming sequel to Black Panther, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever had just been released during the San Diego Comic-Con 2022. The trailer featured the arrival of Namor and possibly a new bearer of the Black Panther title. The trailer looked a lot like a tribute to Chadwick Boseman, who previously portrayed Black Panther in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Due to Chadwick’s untimely passing in 2020 after his long battle with cancer, MCU has previously decided to “not recast” Black Panther, instead, the sequel will be focusing on who will hold the title after the supposed death of T’Challa (Boseman) in the MCU.
Coincidentally, as mentioned, the game somewhat follows a similar path to the upcoming film. EA isn’t sharing any further details yet, but this one is already getting a lot of Marvel fans feeling ecstatic. Additionally, this is going to be the first video game dedicated solely to the titular character. Plus, he had already made prior appearances in games like Marvel’s Avengers and Marvel’s Ultimate Alliance 3.
There are going to be a lot more Marvel-related video games coming in the future like:
- Marvel’s Wolverine
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- and the most anticipated title, Marvel’s Midnight Suns
