Wait a minute, this one looks familiar! The backlash for Slater Young and his new Monterrazas project isn’t over. After getting slammed for various reasons, primarily due to “environmental risks,” Slater Young is again in the middle of hellfire after The Rise at Monterrazas gets questioned for originality. Netizens who dug deeper discovered that this Cebu-based mountainside condominium is copied from a design concept from Greece. How accurate is this allegation? Did Slater Young and his associates copy their design?
Is Slater Young’s The Rise at Monterrazas a copy of 314 Architecture Studio’s design concept?
Last August 24, the budding engineer turned entrepreneur/influencer Slater Young revealed their latest project, The Rise at Monterrazas. Many were amazed and mesmerized by the new Monterrazas project, while others thought otherwise. Netizens found the idea detrimental to nature and could cause many problems. One Twitter user said Slater Young is becoming the “Cynthia Villar of Engineering” with his concepts. Furthermore, people call the social media icon a hypocrite for promoting green architecture while he destroys the mountain. Obviously, only the rich and elite can afford these houses, which started a ruckus online.
But the hate does not stop there. Some are also calling Young’s Monterrazas a copy, or rather a ripoff, of an architecture firm called 314 Architecture Studio. If you look at it, Monterrazas and 314 Studios’ groundbreaking idea called the “Gods and Dreams Resort” looks pretty much the same. The former is already in the works in downtown Cebu, Philippines, while the latter is still just a vision.

However, if Monterrazas really did copy 314 Architecture Studio’s idea, Slater Young should not be getting some kind of hate. Here’s why:
- First, Slater Young is a civil engineer. The engineering design aims to comply with an infrastructure’s strength and structural integrity standards, while the architect does the rest of the design – aesthetics and more. That being said, Slater has a partner company, the LGG Architects.
- As mentioned by Slater Young, the Monterrazas are heavily inspired by the Banaue Rice Terraces in Luzon. Although it’s very similar to 314 Studio’s Gods and Dreams Resort, it’s safe to assume it’s not totally copied but again inspired by it.
- Technically, if it’s not patented, an architectural design can be copied if given permission. So, we’d like to think that Slater Young and his associates already made these steps.
- Lastly, the design of The Rise at Monterrazas and the Gods and Dreams Resort isn’t very new. Again, the Philippine version was inspired by the Banaue Rice Terraces. On the other hand, 314 Studio’s concept was inspired by The Sanctuary of Asclepius in Greece.
