Does Robert Downey Jr. Agree to Return to MCU? Marvel Reportedly Plans to Bring Back Original Avengers

Robert Downey Jr. has reportedly agreed to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe if the claims Marvel is planning to make a new Avengers movie is anything to go by. Allegedly, the studio is facing several problems on- and off-screen after, from its content to Jonathan Majors’ arrest, since its multiverse saga has begun. That said, Marvel is eyeing to make a bold move to at least alleviate these issues by bringing back the original Avengers, led by RDJ, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, and Jeremy Renner.

Robert Downey Jr. Allegedly Agrees to MCU Return

MCU is one of the biggest movie franchises in the world, not to mention one of the highest-grossing at the box office. Hence, many are always looking forward to what’s coming in this movie series, which comes with the highest expectations.

Don’t get the fans wrong, Marvel has set the standards high with the beginning of The Infinity Saga, starting with the first Iron Man movie in 2008. But with the end of it in Avengers: Endgame in 2019, everything seems to have gone down a downward spiral, with the many issues the studio has to face.

So, to bring back the fans’ interest and at least clear its name, Marvel reportedly sees the return of the original Avengers star, led by Robert Downey Jr. himself, as a nice move. And to hype up the already-excited fans, internet scooper MyTimeToShineHello shared on X (formerly Twitter) that the 58-year-old has agreed to wear his Iron Man suit again and assemble with the Avengers.

Of course, this is a welcoming idea for the die-hard Iron Man, Avengers, and Marvel fans in general. However, the actor himself has yet to break his silence about it. That said, the scooper’s claim should be taken with a grain of salt, though he’s known for making the right assumptions about the MCU all along.

RDJ himself even said he hadn’t closed the door to reprising his role as the genius, billionaire, playboy, and philanthropist Tony Stark. However, it could happen if there were only “creative plans” that would incite him to return.

“There would have to be a super compelling argument and a series of events that made it obvious. But the other thing is, I wanna do other stuff,” he said during an appearance on Joe Rogan’s podcast in 2022.

Indeed, after his over-a-decade stint as Iron Man in the MCU, RDJ was busy doing non-superhero projects. After Endgame, he was seen as the world-famous doctor in Dolittle in 2020 and as one of the most important atomic-energy advisers, Lewis Strauss, in the U.S. during the Cold War in this year’s box-office film Oppenheimer.

Will Marvel Make a New Avengers Movie?

Marvel surprised everyone when a bombshell report by Variety claimed that the company was planning to bring back the original Avengers to the MCU fold. Currently, the studio is experiencing a slew of problems, like producing a lot of superhero content that overwhelms not just the viewers but also the creatives behind the scenes. It also sees a major decline at the box office, with the upcoming The Marvels posing as one the lowest-earning movies in the franchise. In addition, Majors’ domestic violence charges have greatly hurt the actor’s reputation, which may also affect his addition to the MCU.

As he plays a major part in Phase 5 of the MCU as the main villain, Kang the Conqueror, Marvel is reportedly reconsidering its plans and making backup plans to introduce a new villain, like Dr. Droom. However, as Majors has already made a huge presence in the Marvel universe as of late, especially with his inclusion in the TV series Loki, this may create another problem for the already-problematic studio.

“Marvel is truly f****d with the whole Kang angle,” one top dealmaker told Variety. “And they haven’t had an opportunity to rewrite until very recently [because of the WGA strike]. But I don’t see a path to how they move forward with him.”

So, to make things work again, in the talks that the Marvel bosses had in September, they allegedly considered bringing back the Avengers team. After this group had changed the world of superhero movies in 2012, they were expected to do the same if they ever made a major comeback to the big screen.

Seeing the return of the Avengers in the MCU won’t even break a sweat for Marvel. Knowing that the fan-favorite characters can sweepingly return to life through the power of the multiverse in the comic books after being killed off, this can also occur in the movies. So, if this happens, a lot of fans will surely celebrate. Now, what everyone needs is confirmation that this will come true.
