Elon Musk’s Tesla Optimus, What does it do?

The era of robots and AI controlling almost everything is upon us. We got a glimpse into the future last Friday at Tesla’s AI Day where they revealed the impressive abilities of their latest project. The humanoid robot is called “Optimus” and it appeared on the same stage as Tesla CEO Elon Musk. It put on quite the show for those in attendance as it danced and waved to the audience.

Elon Musk is considered the richest man on the planet as his company, Tesla, aims to bring us closer to the future with its latest innovations in technology. The way Optimus will shape the future is that Tesla looks like they want to put these robots into the workforce and have them be responsible for jobs in factories.

Elon Musk’s Tesla is the creator of Optimus – what can this robot do?

During the event called AI Day held in Silicon Valley, tech fans were in for a treat when Elon Musk unveiled Optimus. Although this humanoid robot doesn’t look as muscular as KAY-O from Valorant, the robot was able to perform a few impressive moves for its audience.

  • Optimus walked on the stage and gave a wave to the audience
  • The robot is obviously still a prototype as its movements are still a bit wonky
  • Aside from waving, Optimus was able to show off its abilities to bend its knees and turn its body
  • Much to the delight of the audience, the robot also pulled out some moves of its own and danced on the stage

Musk proudly revealed to the audience that they were able to finally make Optimus walk around on its own. Previously, the robot had to be supported by various mechanical cables and cranes to move around.

During the event, the audience was shown a video of Optimus doing tasks typically done by humans. Optimus was able to carry around a box, water some plants, and move around some metal bars in the Tesla factory.

Tesla is creating Optimus mostly for commercial use

The thought of having a robot running around our houses and cleaning after us is neat and all, but that doesn’t seem to be the case here. For now, we’ll have to settle with Roombas zooming around our floors and sucking up all the dirt.

According to Musk, their goal is “to make a useful humanoid robot as quickly as possible”. Even though this might mean robot maids, the company engineers at Tesla say that robots like Optimus will be tested in car factories. Here, they’ll take on the jobs that workers in car factories usually do.

Musk also promises that Optimus will have the ability to perform both boring and dangerous jobs. The part where the robot moved around parts in the Tesla factory was already hinting at this.

But of course, we shouldn’t leave out the possibility that the general public will be able to purchase Optimus soon.

  • Elon Musk and Tesla need to make some changes to Optimus first
  • Give it a few years and Musk estimates that Optimus will be available to the public by then
  • Tesla will produce millions of units of Optimus
  • The robot will reportedly cost $20,000 to purchase. This price tag is significantly cheaper than buying a new car

The future of humanoid robots is near

When Optimus does become available for home use, it’ll perform as a sort of helper around the house. Tesla’s robots are planned to help in mowing the lawn, cleaning up, and even caring for the elderly. This was revealed at a TED Talk featuring Tesla’s CEO, according to Reuters.

Probably the most outlandish thing that Musk wants the robots of the future to do is to become a human’s sex partner. Obviously, Musk and Tesla have a lot of plans for robots and their inevitable integration into society. We can only hope that nothing close to the Terminator movies happens in real life once robots become a part of our world.
