Ooblets, indie developer Gumberland’s title was recently made exclusive to Epic Games Store. The announcement came alongside a post on their website stating that they made the decision since Epic was giving them an upfront funding for their game.
This was taken negatively by the community creating a huge backlash and resulting in “false information, including fake screenshots, videos, and technical analysis, accompanied by harassment of partners, promotion of hateful themes, and intimidation of those with opposing views”, as Epic states. To address the aforementioned backlash, Epic released a statement clarifying on the situation. Epic adds -:
“Epic is working together with many game developers and other partners to build what we believe will be a healthier and more competitive multi-store world for the future. We remain fully committed, and we will steadfastly support our partners throughout these challenges. Many thanks to all of you that continue to promote and advocate for healthy, truthful discussion about the games business and stand up to all manners of abuse.”
This comes at a time when the Epic Store is facing huge backlash due to its exclusivity bragging marketing strategy. A number of AAAs and indies switched to limited time to Epic Store exclusives and that has been taken negatively by the community.
