The latest DLC of Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree has introduced a powerful new consumable known as the Messmerfire Grease. This rare consumable imbues weapons and unleashes a powerful flame effect adding an extra edge in the battle against formidable foes.
This rare consumable can be found throughout the Shadow realm, but the quantity is very limited. Alternatively, you may also craft this item if you manage to retrieve the required materials and its recipe.
Where to find Messmerfire Grease in Elden Ring Shadow of Erdtree
Messmerfire Grease can be found as random drops throughout the Shadow Realm, however, some specific locations are guaranteed to have this item. Look around in the following locations to obtain it:
- Shadow Keep: Go to Shadow Keep and locate the corpses near the cluster of ships. You will find a stack of Messmerfire Grease from one of these corpses.
- First Site of Grace: From the first site of grace head east towards the prominent archway distance. Loot the corpse at the base of the archway to obtain the item.
- Belurat Tower Settlement: From the second fountain, descend to the sewers using the ladder. Defeat the shadow enemies and you can claim the Messmerfire Grease from the pile of corpses.
How to craft Messmerfire Grease in Shadow of Erdtree
To craft the Messmerfire’s Grease, you will need the Fire Knight’s Cookbook. Follow these steps to obtain it:
- Pass through Castles Ensis and head to Scadu Altus.
- Move past the Black Knights patrolling the Messmer soldier military camp.
- Go to the southwest corner of the camp and enter the tent, where you will find the Fire Knight’s Cookbook.
You will require two important items to craft the Messmerfire grease – a Knot Resin and a Black Pyrefly.
You will get Knot Resin in the following locations:
- Can be farmed by defeating the Shadow Husks found in the Moorth Ruins site of grace.
- Head to a small island in the Belurat Tower Settlement guarded by 4 Man-Flies to retrieve this item from the swamp.
- In Castle Ensis, reach the cave near the waterfall to obtain this item lying on top of a corpse.
A Black Pyrefly can be found in the following regions:
- Burnt regions including the Scorched Ruins near the big arch crossing the shadow soldiers.
- In Shadow Keep, defeat the Fire Knight on the fourth floor to retrieve the item.
- In Belurat Tower Settlement, you can get this item on top of a dead body at the place where you encounter a Horned Warrior.
Having collected all the materials, open the crafting menu, select Messmerfire Grease from the list of craftable items, and craft the number of items you require.
How to use Messmerfire Grease
During combat, you can use the Messmerfire Grease against enemies who are vulnerable to fire damage. This consumable can be applied to your weapon to maximize its damage output. Time your attacks and combine them with other powerful buffs and consumables like Hefty Fire Pots and Furnace Pots to achieve the best results.
You can carry up to 10 Messmerfire Greases in your inventory and up to 600 in your chest. So, regularly transfer the excess items to your chest to avoid hitting the inventory cap during your quests.
