John Wick has become one of the most beloved action franchises in recent years, thanks to its heart-stopping action scenes and fantastic storyline. Of course, it wouldn’t be possible without the impressive performance of Keanu Reeves in the titular role. With four successful films under its belt, fans are eager to know if there will be a fifth installment in the series. The franchise has not only been successful at the box office but also garnered critical acclaim for its unique blend of storytelling and action. That being said, should John Wick’s fans get a fifth installment or is it time to hang his guns for good?
The success of the John Wick franchise: A review of the box office performance and critical reception of the previous films in the series
The John Wick series never failed its audience thus far. It’s been a wild ride for fans of the gutsy assassin but it seems like John isn’t finished yet. To say that the John Wick franchise was a success is an understatement. The first film gathered $82 Million at the box office worldwide. Pretty good for a project with a budget of only $20 Million. The sequel, John Wick 2, which was only made for about $40 Million was even better by grossing more than $170 Million at the box office.
In 2019, came the third installment to an already amazing franchise, John Wick: Chapter 3- Parabellum. An outstanding $327.3 Million came out of a mere $70 Million budget and gathered positive reviews from critics and viewers. Chapter 3 paved the way for a fourth film and two spin-offs that are creating John Wick’s universe. John Wick 4 Chapter 4 has already premiered at Odeon Luxe Leicester Square in London on March 6, 2023, but is set to hit the theaters worldwide on March 24, 2023.
The future of the franchise: John Wick director Chad Stahelski says they’re taking a break for now, but the door is still open for another sequel
In an interview with Hollywood Reporter, the American stuntman and filmmaker Chad Stahelski made a disappointing revelation.
“In our minds, Keanu and I are done for the moment. We’re going to give John Wick a rest. I’m sure the studio has a plan. If everyone loves it and it goes kooky, then we’ll take a quiet minute. Wicks always, for some weird reason, always get the latest release date in Japan. It’s always like, three months later. If it’s the same this time, we’ll do a Japanese tour and release the movie in September. Keanu and I will take the long trip to Tokyo, we’ll sit in the Imperial Hotel Scotch Bar and go, ‘What do you think?’ We’ll have a couple of 20-year-old whiskies and write some ideas on napkins. If those ideas stick, maybe we’ll make a movie.”
After all that has been said, is there a chance for a John Wick 5?
Truthfully, there’s a great chance we will be getting a John Wick 5. The series proved to be one of the best movie franchises in history with how big it makes in the cinemas. Plus, the people behind the film is relying on how well it is received by the viewers. And, as the ratings are going, it’s exceeding expectations.
Those who have seen the premiere in London have said that John Wick 4 is the best one yet. IMDB has rated the movie 9.4/10 while Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 92% in Tomatometer. Some even scored the fourth chapter a perfect. The only thing left to see is how much it makes in theaters this year. In addition, Lionsgate Studios were supposed to film John Wick 4 and 5 together. However, the idea was scrapped and only Chapter 4 was made to keep the quality in the highest state. And, since every John Wick movie comes out every couple of years, we could expect the same with John Wick 5 to come out two to three years from now.
The John Wick universe: Everything coming your way
Even without the confirmation of a 5th film, there is still a lot to look forward to inside the world of John Wick. First, a spin-off titled “Ballerina” featuring the award-winning actress Ana de Armas. “Ballerina” will highlight the roots of a young assassin as she seeks vengeance against the people who killed her family. We can trace the origin of this story in a scene in John Wick 3: Parabellum, where John Wick visits his former crime family, the Ruska Roma. In there you will see that the ballerinas were not only trained to just dance but also to kill.
Another prequel to John Wick’s rampage is a project called “The Continental”. This tv series will focus on the perspective of the hotel’s manager, a young Winston Scott who will be played by Colin Woodell. Winston was played by iconic actor Ian McShane in the John Wick series.
The first three John Wick films are now available and can be streamed on Netflix. Stream all three movies to catch up on every kill John Wick had and how he has become the Baba Yaga (The Boogeyman).
