To play in the NBA is a dream for most ballers, but to own an NBA team? Well, that’s another thing. To own a team in the NBA, you must be either SUPER RICH or SUPER DUPER RICH. Apparently, two of the richest and most influential athletes today named LeBron James and Floyd Mayweather Jr. are already planning on owning an NBA team.
It isn’t exactly breaking news to NBA fans since LeBron has previously shown interest in owning or buying a professional team. The King even went to the extreme by saying that “he wants a team in Vegas”. In the past, there have been rumors of a future league expansion (from 30 teams to 32 teams) which Adam Silver, the NBA Commissioner, said was not true. Though we won’t be seeing an expansion any sooner, Adam Silver said that the NBA will one day move “invariably”.
We have seen how brilliant LBJ’s basketball mind is. Dubbed as LeGM and LeCoach by some, James definitely has an eye for talent. It would be very interesting if he takes his “drafting” talents as a team owner. More so, we think the King is trying to push his GOAT status higher by owning an NBA team, just like Michael Jordan. In addition to that, LeBron joins Jordan and the late Kobe Bryant in the billionaire NBA players club just recently.

However, LeBron James is not alone in team ownership aspirations.
Earlier this week, the legendary boxer Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. revealed that he and his team have been in contact with certain individuals regarding franchise ownership in the NBA
“That’s something I’ve been working on behind the scenes, but I’ve never [come] out and publicly talked about that with the media,” said Mayweather. “Me and my team have been working behind the scenes with the NBA. I can’t say exactly where, but I’m working on getting a team.”
Mayweather also noted that he is extremely interested in not just being a minority shareholder, but the majority owner. He also added that Vegas would be a perfect spot for a new NBA team in the future.
LBJ and Mayweather’s groundbreaking plans are highly possible. The new millennium saw a handful of former athletes buying shares of an NBA team. Some of which are:
- Michael Jordan (Charlotte Hornets)
- Shaquille O’Neal (Sacramento Kings)
- Dwyane Wade (Utah Jazz)
If LeBron James and Floyd Mayweather pull the strings, which team do you see them owning in the future?
