Rauru’s introduction happens during the initial stage of the story when the NPC saves Link. According to the lore, Rauru is one of the Seven Sages. He is known as the Sage of Light. The Seven Sages are known for being the ones responsible for sealing off Ganon. For the uninitiated, Ganon is the evil entity that looms over the Zelda universe.
Rauru is also known for building the Temple of Time, which is present in both Ocarina of Time and Breath of the Wild. The entity is also well acquainted with the Hyrule race itself. Thus, he can be seen saving Link at the beginning of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

Now that the Rauru we meet in Tears of the Kingdom does not look the same as the Rauru in previous entries, this leaves many fans confused. One possible explanation is that the name Rauru is given to whoever is the Sage of Light. This does not necessarily mean that Rauru is the name of a particular person.
It is also possible that this Tears of the Kingdom NPC is entirely different, as there have been many other NPCs named Rauru in the Zelda universe. However, many fans believe that the Rauru in ToTK is the Sage of Time and not the Sage of Light.

Rauru focuses on guiding Link throughout the game. As the story progresses, the character proves their importance through gameplay and the endgame narrative. The character also helps explain some gameplay mechanics when starting The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
