Lip-smacking food in Studio Ghibli movies

Lip-smacking food from Studio Ghibli

Studio Ghibli movies are the most prominent ways to capture our imaginations, making us extremely hungry. Studio Ghibli always goes out of its way to introduce beautiful lip-smacking foods that make the movies appealing to us and become our comfort food.

Every  Studio Ghibli fan is aware of Miyazaki’s magic of appealing to their fans with beautiful animations of their food. The films are not able for a “feel-good” which makes the fans feel incredibly comfortable and cozy. Miyazaki’s films often capture the essence of environmentalism, love, pacifism, and other feel-good factors that make them appealing to the fans.

Here are some listed fan-favorite foods that are often craved when they are feeling a tad bit low.

A look at delicious Studio Ghibli food: Breakfast from Howl’s Moving Castle, Buffet from Spirited Away, and more

1) The buffet – Spirited Away

The buffet in Spirited Away was equally delicious and dangerous. The food stall where Chihiro’s parents gorge on hunger initiates the plot of the movie. The story starts when 10-year-old Chihiro’s father takes a shortcut through the forest and ends up in an amusement park while moving to a new home. Out of hunger and exhaustion, Chihiro’s parents help themselves to the buffet and indulge in the tantalizing food present in front of them.

However, Chihiro, not being hungry chooses to explore the premises. When she returns she finds that both her parents have transformed into pigs. This embarks Chihiro’s journey to the world of spirits to help her parents return to their original form.

In defense of Chihiro’s parents, the “pigging out” in the buffet was justified. The buffet consisted of bountiful plates of meats and different treats which were delicious to behold and get the stomach rumbling. Miyazaki has played a keen attention in animating the steam rolling out of food making it look fresh even for the fans to gobble up it.

2) The breakfast – Howl’s Moving Castle

Originally Howl’s Moving Castle is based on a novel 1986 written by Diana Wynne Jones. The story’s main protagonist Sophie is transformed into an old woman. The movie revolves around her getting rid of the curse and meets Howl on her way. She becomes Howl’s housekeeper and eventually gets swept up by his resistance to a rating war. In the story, Howl is an insecure wizard who finally regains his confidence once Sophie enters his life.

The bonafide breakfast in Howl’s Moving Castle consists of a pan of bacon and eggs with bread. This Studio Ghibli food is famous because eggs and bacon are easily available and literally, are the cheapest of all. However, the animators of this movie chose to make it fancy and made it feel like a luxury that appealed to the fans to their core. The lack of pretense and simplicity in good food is what makes the fan comfortable around this movie and of course, its lip-smacking foods.

3) Magic ramen – Ponyo

Making mouthwatering and appetizing ramen seems to be a very difficult task. However, the animators of Ponyo have made it easy and thereby created the “Plato’s Form” of ramen. This dish is perfect on a cozy rainy day when someone is feeling lazy and wants to curl up by their lamp. This food is the definition of absolute perfection because of its simple preparation methods making it even more special.

The dish consists of every comfort food that one craves after a long day. It is an amalgamation of bacon, runny eggs, scallions, and ramen which warms the hearts of the fans to their core. The scallions over the top of the ramen act as the “Cherry on top” which makes it even more interesting.

4) Tempura – From Up on Poppy Hill

Speaking of simple dishes, tempura is one of the most staple dishes in Japan. The representation of tempura in this movie has been top notch and it is also sometimes considered unfair by the fans to even include such a mouthwatering treat in the movie.

This movie not only makes the fan instantly crave this food, but it also wants them to try to make this with their own hands. However, it often follows with the regret that the tempura might not be as juicy as the one shown in the movie.

5) Bento box – My Neighbor Totoro

This meal might not seem extravagant, but it hits the fan right in their nostalgia. The fans often wish that their parents packed such a lunchbox for them while they were in school. The fans who also used to take bento boxes to their school often recalled their memories of school life and wish to go back to that life of simplicity and ease.

The food consists of dried plums, smoked sardine, edamame, sticky rice, and sakura petals which are a staple in any Japanese cuisine. Not only is the food tasty, but the bento box scene in the movie My Neighbor Totoro portrays the sweetest relationship between two siblings that makes the fans bawl over it.
