Metacritic Changes User Score System To Combat Review Bombings
Metacritic has tweaked its User Score system to combat future review bombings. We’re assuming this decision came after the aggressive review bombing of The Last of Us Part II.
Hundreds and thousands of players across the world, disappointed with the game, gave The Last of Us Part II a zero out of ten. Many gave that score because they didn’t like the story, however, there were many constructive criticism-based reviews as well.
Metacritic now asks its users to spend some time playing the game before they give their scores. Take, for instance, the game – Superliminal. It’s a game coming out on July 7th, 2020, for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. The user reviews, however, open at 12:00 pm PST on July 9.
Earlier, users were free to drop reviews the moment the game was out. Now, they have enforced a certain amount of time gap for users to drop their review scores.
Although this won’t stop people who want to review bomb a game, it will delay it. It could also mean Metacritic will lose many user reviews as people will move onto some other platform to write their reviews. This would, however, decrease the amount of review bombing scores.
One way Metacritic can fix User Scores once and for all is to make it mandatory for users to link their game accounts for verification of ownership of the game. And a “Verified Player” tag beside their usernames would help people decide if a review is rational or purely for bombing purposes.
