On Saturday afternoon, the Asian American community in the said locale faced a sudden and tragic event that took lives and left a few in critical condition. The Monterey Park California Chinese New Year mass shooting has left everyone in shock after the gunman wounded nine people and killed 11 others, who is the gunman, and what happened there? After taking lives and injuring people during the Chinese Lunar New Year celebration, the authorities have distinguished the man behind this horrendous doing. They found the 72-year-old Huu Can Tran.

- It is said that the gunman used around 42 rounds of ammunition at the dance studio in Monterey Park. When Huu Can Tran reached the second dance hall, a brave Brandon Tsay disarmed the former. The gunman then fled from the area with his white van.
- Moreover, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna shared that the accused had a “limited criminal history”. Huu Can Tran faced arrest in 1990 for the illegal possession of a firearm.
- On Sunday, the day after the incident, the authorities found Can Tran’s vehicle and decided to approach it. They heard a gunshot and retreated first. A few hours after, the SWAT team cleared the area and they found the 72-year-old dead after a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
What could be the motive?
At this point, a clear motive may not be obtained as the man took his own life. The authorities may be looking at many possible motives present in the incident.
- In the Sheriff’s words, “And we’re as curious as you are because it’s — I mean, this is disturbing… How can you even come to reason that somebody would even think about doing something like this? It’s horrendous,” via a CNN report.
- Significantly, according to another CNN report, Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón said that the gunman was “very familiar” with the area. Huu Can Tran was part of the community and the place where he met his ex-wife. They believe that the mass shooting has been very targeted.
- On Monday, the authorities revealed that the possible motive would be jealousy over a relationship. A personal dispute may have sparked the gunman to do such a crime.

The festival in Monterey Park ended around 9 p.m. However, when everyone thought of a peaceful night, gunfire disrupted that thought. The Star Ballroom Dance Studio on West Garvey Avenue was attacked.
- A Monterey Park resident shared that their friend came out of the bathroom in the studio, then found the gunman who gunned down three people — two women and the boss of the club.
- However, when the police arrived at the said studio, more victims were found. But the mass shooting and the gunman didn’t stop there.
- The gunman was believed to head to a second dance facility not far away from Alhambra. Moreover, a few sighted that the gunman kept multiple rounds of ammunition that once he finishes the round, he quickly reloads another.
- Thankfully, Brandon Tsay was quick to disarm the gunman when he moved to the second dance hall. The authorities have yet to identify and disclose the identities of the victims of the mass shooting in Monterey Park California. The victims’ ages from 50-year-olds to 60-year-olds, and 70s too.
