The production of the Netflix Series “The Chosen One” has been suspended temporarily after an unfortunate accident occurred last June 16th. The accident had claimed the lives of two actors and left six others injured; including two cast members and four crew members. The victims are Raymundo Garduño Cruz and Juan Francisco González Aguilar, as confirmed by the Baja California Department of Culture.
As of the moment, the injured crew and cast members are under monitoring. They are in a stable condition, according to reports.
The accident had not taken place during the filming but was during transit between Santa Rosalía and the local airport. The cast and crew van had strayed off-road onto the desert area nearby. This had caused the van to flip over and crash. According to initial reports and witnesses, those involved in the incident followed all safety protocols. The local authorities are looking into the circumstances to see what had caused this event.

The Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) is also looking into the accident. “SAG-AFTRA has been in contact with Netflix and with the Mexican actors union ANDA about this incident and we are investigating the circumstances with local production,” their spokesperson had said in a statement. They further commented that workplace safety is a top priority for them and that they will do all necessary steps to uphold it
Redrum, the company behind the filming of ‘The Chosen One’ had released a statement through their spokesperson.
“Redrum has been cooperating with local authorities and initial reports and accounts from witnesses indicate that all safety protocols were in place and this was an unfortunate accident.” said earlier this week. The tragic accident had “shocked everyone working on the show” and filled everyone with “deep sadness,” expressed the Redrum spokesperson.
Liliana Conlisk Gallegos, a close friend of the victim Juan Francisco González Aguilar, made a public statement through media outlets. She had mentioned past complaints from the deceased. They had also complained about the poor transportation and logistics of the team behind running the show production. “It fills me rage that there are reports of abuse and exploitation being shred by people involved with the production,” Aguilar’s close friend said. They called for an investigation but it is unclear if anything was found and reported.
Furthermore, Netflix has also released its own statement regarding The Chosen One’s accident.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic accident that took the lives of Ray Garduño and Juan Francisco González. Our thoughts are with their loved ones and with those injured during this unfortunate accident.” said the Netflix spokesperson last Monday.
Netflix’s Series ‘The Chosen One’’ is based on a comic book series by Mark Millar and Peter Gross. It follows a 12-year-old boy destined to save humankind as the Returned Jesus Christ. The project had only started filming in Mexico just last April. It is not clear yet what Netflix plans for this for the future, with no sure timeline at the moment.
