Only Murders in the Building Season 4: What Plot to Expect + Characters

Only Murders in the Building Season 4 is happening! Hulu renewed the show for a fourth season the same day as the network released its third season finale. So, what would happen in the next season after the new murder? Also, who would be the returning characters in the fourth season? Let’s explore!

Only Murders in the Building Season 4

Only Murders in the Building has shown great success since it started airing in 2021. It has become the most-watched original comedy series on Hulu. Its third season’s first episode is also the most-watched premiere day of any scripted show on the network this year.

In addition, the series ranked as the ninth most-watched title of the week when the third season launched on August 8, 2023, and the third streaming original series, according to Nielsen’s weekly streaming rankings. And its success doesn’t just stop there; the show has kept its sixth spot on the streaming original in the following weeks.

That said, it’s no surprise that Hulu renewed the show for another season. And as the third season ended with another mysterious murder in the building, Mabel (Selena Gomez), Oliver (Martin Short), and Charles-Haden (Steve Martin) are up for another investigation in Only Murders in the Building Season 4.

What Plot to Expect in Only Murders in the Building Season 4?

Warning: The following content features major Only Murders in the Building Season 3 spoilers.

The third season ended with the death of Sazz (Jane Lynch) after being shot in the chest and falling to the floor of Charles’ kitchen. Though Hulu has yet to reveal the official plot of Only Murders in the Building Season 4, it’s expected to delve into Sazz’s killing and the possibility of the murderer targeting Charles. This could even be proven by Sazz trying to write something on the floor with her blood, but the screen eventually cuts to black.

So, will someone try to kill Charles in the fourth season? Showrunner John Hoffman told The Hollywood Reporter there would be much exploring to get into that. It’s also good to note that the victims all have connections to the trio, so the upcoming season would be the perfect chance to have Charles explore those links.

Who are the Returning Characters in Only Murders in the Building Season 4?

Of course, Gomez, Short, and Martin are expected to return to reprise their roles in Only Murders in the Building Season 4. Jane Lynch may also come back to play a more significant role as Sazz after her unexpected murder in the previous season.

As the show has been featuring great celebrity appearances every season, such as Paul Rudd and Meryl Streep in the third season, there may be another one or two A-list stars who will join the upcoming installment. So far, there are no words for who these stars will be, considering the season renewal is relatively new. There will undoubtedly be more announcements coming in the following months.

Does Only Murders in the Building Deserve its Renewal?

Only Murders in the Building features a familiar setting every time a new season ends and begins. Someone will mysteriously die, and the trio will start an investigation to know who’s behind the murder. But despite featuring this recurring plot, it can’t be denied that there’s a mystery surrounding these deaths that makes fans come back for more.

Sure, the deaths are pretty expected, but who will be the next victims and their culprits are always unpredictable. And who would have thought that seeing Gomez, Short, and Martin on one screen together would be a perfect combination? No one sees it coming, and it’s just one of the many strengths of Only Murders in the Building that makes it deserving of many seasons of renewal.
