The Pacific Ocean is massive and can be rough and dangerous. It’s a big challenge for sailors as there aren’t many land masses nearby once you set sail. That’s precisely what happened to Tim Shaddock, a 51-year-old guy from Sydney, and his loyal dog, Bella. Their story is a real-life replica of the Tom Hanks movie “Cast Away.” Shaddock got lost in the Pacific Ocean for two months after a bad storm messed up their boat’s electronics and communication system. But against all odds, they survived by eating raw fish and collecting rainwater. Finally, on July 12, a helicopter accompanying a tuna trawler spotted and rescued them. Here is a timeline of what happened with the Australian man and his dog, who survived for two months in the Pacific Ocean.
Setting Sail
In April, Shaddock started on a 3,700-mile journey that would take him from La Paz, Mexico, to French Polynesia. The first two weeks went without any issues. Unfortunately, a storm erupted two weeks later, damaging the boat’s electronics.
Shaddock and Bella were abandoned at sea in the North Pacific as the catamaran’s electronics and communication system stopped working after being damaged by the storm. Shaddock was forced to rely on his survival abilities because he could not call for assistance. He had some fishing gear and survival supplies, which became his lifesaver.
The Australian man realized that if he wanted to survive, he needed drinkable water, which is hard to find in the middle of an ocean. He caught raw fish using his fishing equipment. Additionally, he used a filtering system to generate drinkable rainwater by collecting it in containers.
A Miraculous Rescue
On July 12, a Mexican fishing boat performing surveillance noticed Shaddock and Bella. They desperately needed supplies and medical care after being lost for two months. A helicopter accompanying a tuna trawler spotted them, and they were finally saved. Their rescuers then sent them to a hospital in Mexico for medical attention.

Shaddock thanked his fishing gear. He also thanked the Mexican fishing trawler crew who rescued him and his furry friend and provided them with food and medical supplies.
Aftermath of Being Rescued
Tim’s doctor stated that despite a challenging experience, his health was amazingly unharmed without serious wounds. Tim was relieved to hear that Bella was healthy because he had worried about her constantly the entire time they had been at sea. Lastly, Tim was appreciative of everyone who supported him after his rescue in having a speedy recovery.

Although the thoughts of being stranded in an ocean are scary, we appreciate Tim’s thinking and determination to survive in these challenging circumstances. His story also highlights the importance of being “prepared” for what can come, as his supplies and fishing equipment played an essential role in his survival.
