The makers of the ABC series The Good Doctor come with a new female-driven spin-off called The Good Lawyer. The spin-off stars Felicity Huffman and Kennedy McMann.
Why you shouldn’t miss The Good Doctor’s Spin-off
The spin-off series of The Good Doctor on ABC begins with Dr. Shaun Murphy needing legal help. He finds a young attorney, Joni DeGroot with whom he connects because of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). DeGroot also doesn’t want to be treated differently due to her circumstances.
- Similar to Dr. Murphy, her symptoms affect her personal and professional life. However, this allows her to approach cases from a different perspective. This connects the spin-off with The Good Doctor where the lead character is on the autism spectrum.
- It shall be interesting to see how the show explores the struggles of living with an invisible disability while also exploring its effects on one’s professional and personal life.

Cast
Kennedy McMann stars as the lead Joni DeGroot. She is a brilliant, funny, and self-aware lawyer. She isn’t afraid to take on new challenges as she agrees to take Dr. Murphy’s legal case even as a new addition to a prestigious law firm.
- Kennedy McMann has been vocal about her struggles with OCD since her days as a child actor. Therefore, it will be interesting to see how her real-life experiences help her portray this character.
- She is best known for her work in CW’s Nancy Drew. She recently appeared in a recurring role in the Hulu series, Tell Me Lies.
Felicity Huffman is appearing as a guest star and her character will be called Janet Stewart. She plays a highly-regarded attorney and partner at the law firm. Stewart is known for her fierce personality, intellect, and dry humor. She represented Dr. Aaron Glassman in several legal matters over the years. Therefore, he reaches her to represent Dr. Murphy, his beloved protégé.
- Felicity Huffman is well acquainted with ABC. She is famous for her parts in American Crime, Sports Night, and Desperate Housewives, which earned her an Emmy Award.
- Recently she appeared in the Netflix series When They See Us. However, this will be her first appearance after the Varsity Blues College Admission Scandal which makes people even more curious.
- Additionally, Freddie Highmore plays Dr. Shaun Murphy in The Good Doctor will appear in the pilot episode of the spin-off the Good Lawyer, according to ABC.

The Good Doctor co-showrunners David Shore and Liz Friedman wrote the screenplay for the pilot, which Ruben Fleischer will direct.
- The highly-anticipated spin-off The Good Lawyer will premiere in a connected pilot episode of The Good Doctor through ABC on Monday, March 6, at 10 p.m., according to TV Line. Additionally, the spin-off will be available to stream on Hulu similar to The Good Doctor.

From a strong female cast to some familiar and new challenges, the spin-off has lots of promising aspects to look forward to. It will be interesting to see how this new spin-off presents the essence of The Good Doctor while creating its own presence in the fandom.
