There seems to be some kind of tension brewing in Salt Lake City as of late. Because of that, questions are rising on who the Jazz should choose to keep – a borderline superstar guard in Donovan Mitchell, or an ultimate defensive big man in Rudy Gobert?
A few days ago, Donovan Mitchell expressed his frustrations with the team and himself after they blew a 25-point lead to the Clippers and eventually lost to them. In a post-game interview after they lost to Paul George and the Clippers, Mitchell said that:
“It’s the same sh*t. I don’t know, it feels the same way. It’s the same thing, it’s literally the same thing. I had six turnovers, turned the ball over too much, we didn’t get back on defense, we didn’t rebound. I don’t know, I don’t have anything for you right now.”

Last playoffs, the Utah Jazz played great basketball. Though they fell short to the Clippers in the 2nd round, they still had a good run. Although they were a great team, they still do not look like a championship-caliber club.
The chemistry between Mitchell and Gobert has been off lately, but Utah Jazz is still in playoff contention and is currently 6th in the Western conference (46-32).
Here’s a fun fact: Donovan Mitchell only averages two passes to Rudy Gobert each night.
- Two passes. Passes folks, not assists. While this does not look that bad, it certainly is not good considering these two are the Jazz centerpiece.
- Remember the Stockton-Malone connection? Maybe Mitchell and Gobert don’t. This could be a rift in the relationship between the two stars.
Gobert, on the other hand, is also stirring the pot.
Recently, the big man from France has shown interest in playing alongside another European star, Luka Doncic. This is not very surprising since Dallas is also interested in Gobert for they badly need a presence in the paint and a rim protector, which Gobert is great at.
Rudy Gobert has an enormous contract with the Jazz (5 years, $205 Million) and teams might not be able to afford him. Mitchell, on the other hand, is having 5 years, $163 Million.
