The sequel to Breath of the Wild has a name, release date, and a new trailer. In the latest Nintendo Direct, they revealed The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom with a new trailer that has fans coming up with theories as to what the plot will be about. Zelda fans were also in for a treat as you can now place a pre-order for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
From the trailers we got so far about the upcoming Zelda game, a lot can happen. Here are some of our takes on what The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom may be about.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom takes Link ‘into the skies’
The game’s official description is as vague as it gets. Although there are some hints in the description, we can’t say for sure if they mean what we think they mean. Here’s the official description of Tears of the Kingdom from Nintendo’s press release:
“In addition to the vast lands of Hyrule, the latest entry in the storied Legend of Zelda series will take you up into the skies! Look forward to Link’s massive adventure starting again…”
We don’t know what exactly Nintendo meant when they said it’s going to be a “massive adventure”. But judging from the latest trailer, the map of Hyrule looks bigger than ever especially if you include the areas in the sky.
Aside from taking to the skies in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, controlling time is also highlighted in the trailers we have so far. We see Link climbing up a chunk of rock which appears to be falling upwards. Then, there’s two serpents creating a perfect circle as the title is revealed.
Even though Nintendo hasn’t revealed much information about the game’s plot, here are some ideas we have that may explain what Tears of the Kingdom is going to be about.
A few plot ideas for Tears of the Kingdom center around timelines and an unbreakable cycle
The new logo for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom showcase two serpents in a circle. We think that this resembles the “ouroboros” which portrays a snake eating its own tail. This symbol is meant to represent an endless cycle of revival and ruination (thanks, Genshin Impact!), so it might hint at something in the game’s timeline.
Nintendo also didn’t shy away as they referenced previous Zelda games in Tears of the Kingdom. With the ouroboros in the logo, it’s possible that Skyloft (from Skyward Sword) is making a comeback before we enter a state of calamity. Once the destruction happens, that’s when the rumored time travel mechanics and timelines come into play.
The title is possibly a reference to previous Zelda games
We should also consider the fact that Nintendo took their time before revealing the game’s official title. According to Nintendo, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom may be a dead giveaway to whatever it is they’re planning in the game.
We mentioned that there are references to previous Zelda games in Tears of the Kingdom. If we look at the title alone, the word “Tears” brings us back to Twilight Princess where we first encountered a quest item called “Tears of Light”.
In The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, we had to collect these Tears to bring back the Spirits of Light.
There are other Zelda games referencing Tears, so if our interpretation of the ouroboros is right, we may experience all kinds of timelines in Tears of the Kingdom.
