The Super Mario Bros Movie overtakes John Wick 4 at the box office: How much did 2023’s highest grossing film earn?

Super Mario Bros Movie Box Office $1 billion worldwide global

The Super Mario Bros Movie has become the highest grossing film of 2023, beating John Wick Chapter 4 at the global box office. The collaboration between Illumination Studios and Nintendo is on its way to surpass the $1 billion mark worldwide. Doing so would make it the first movie of the year to achieve this milestone.

The movie has broken several records since its launch during the Easter holiday. It had already overtaken Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania as the top-grossing movie of the year to date at both the domestic and international box office. It has also become the highest grossing video game adaptation of all time, overtaking Warcraft and Pokémon: Detective Pikachu.

The Super Mario Bros Movie’s worldwide and domestic box office numbers

Overall, The Super Mario Bros Movie has grossed $347.8 million domestically and $330 million overseas, bringing its global tally to an impressive $678 million. This is much ahead of high-earners like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Creed III, John Wick: Chapter 4, Scream VI and Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

It has also performed exceptionally well in foreign markets, grossing $94 million from 71 markets in its second weekend, with Mexico leading the way with a massive $52 million.

In its second weekend of play in North America, the movie grossed $85 million from 4,371 theaters, which was more than expected and represented a drop of just 41%. This is the biggest second weekend ever for an animated film, surpassing Frozen 2.

Competition at the box office for The Super Mario Bros Movie

The Super Mario Bros Movie has beaten out new releases such as Renfield and The Pope’s Exorcist, both of which debuted to mixed critical reviews. Despite Renfield taking a bite out of its box office previews, the movie has continued to perform well and there is already talk of a sequel.

Ben Affleck’s Air is currently battling it out with Renfield for fourth place, with both movies estimated to have grossed $7.7 million each. Apart from the new releases, The Super Mario Bros movie faces competition only from previous biggies like John Wick 4 and Dungeons & Dragons.

Overall, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has proven to be a bona fide blockbuster, breaking records and surpassing expectations. Its success has cemented its place as one of the highest grossing movies of 2023.

Will there be a Super Mario Bros Movie 2?

The 1993 live-action movie adaptation of Super Mario Brothers was widely considered a disaster, so the creators of the new animated version were determined to regain the trust of the franchise’s many devoted fans.

The new adaptation of the legendary Nintendo franchise features a star-studded voice cast, including Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, and Seth Rogen.

The movie’s commercial success has set the stage for potential sequels in the future. In fact, Chris Pratt, who voices Mario in the movie, has hinted that the sequel’s direction is hidden in a post-credits scene.
