Twitter: Why is Shazam 2 trending? Zachary Levi under fire for ‘garbage’ comments

Shazam 2 Zachary Levi garbage

It’s been a while since DC’s Shazam 2 came out, bombed in the box office and left with little to no trace. However, the movie’s actors cannot seem to stay out of controversy, especially its lead actor Zachary Levi. The 42-year-old actor has set the internet buzzing with an arguably unnecessary statement. Let’s take a look at why Shazam 2 is trending on Twitter and explore Zachary Levi’s ‘garbage’ comments.

What did Zachary Levi say?

During the Chicago Fan Expo over the weekend, Zachary Levi made a controversial statement while voicing his support for the writers’ and actors’ strike. He made a bold claim as he called out the Hollywood film industry for producing garbage content.

The Shazam actor said, “I personally feel like the amount of content that comes out of Hollywood that is garbage — they don’t care enough to actually make it great for you guys. They don’t.” And his rant did not end there.

Zachary Levi spoke about how fans watch a trailer many times hoping the movie is just as cool but later it turns out to be bad. He claims that the industry knows once audiences have bought tickets, they’ve got their money.

The actor believes that the only way to change this situation is to ‘not go to the garbage’. He suggested people to not actively choose the garbage (referring to bad content) and this would help the industry.

Social media roasts Zachary Levi

Zachary Levi’s ‘garbage’ comments at the fan event might be well-intentioned but they clearly did not sit well with social media users. People took to Twitter to call out his hypocrisy as they pointed to Shazam! Fury of the Gods being a complete dud.

The actor’s critics also highlighted the fact that his upcoming project is a Spy Kids reboot. Others joked that Zachary Levi would be unemployed if it wasn’t for the so-called garbage films. Even his fans seemed to be concerned over his state of mind since Shazam 2.

Twitter users emphasized that Zachary Levi does not possess enough acting prowess to go on passing around snide comments like these while he himself is acting in sub-standard films.

Does Shazam 2 qualify as ‘garbage’?

With a 6/10 rating on IMDb and a 49% score on Rotten Tomatoes, Shazam! Fury of the Gods clearly did not live up to the original’s standards. Even at the box office, the movie grossed only $134 million worldwide compared to its production budget of $125 million.

The film was released in March 2023 but Zachary Levi has been defending it even in his recent interviews and podcasts. He defended the film saying that a movie doesn’t have to be ‘high art’ to be enjoyed as a piece of light entertainment.

The actor also subtly blamed Black Adam star Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson for sabotaging his film. While the entire DCEU went through a makeover thanks to new CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran, it’s unlikely that Zachary Levi will ever return to play Billy Batson.
