You probably have come across a meme on the internet featuring a random Filipino guy named Senior Agila or Senior Aguila. Well, that man isn’t exactly random. In fact, he is a big name in the southern part of the Philippines and is already getting notoriety for all the bad reasons. Who is this Senior Agila and why is he trending right now?
Who is Senior Agila?
Senior Agila or Jey Rence Quilario in real life who reportedly declared himself as the “reincarnation of God”, “the Messiah”, and “Sto. Niño” (child Jesus), is a suspected cult leader. Quilario is currently the appointed President of the Surigao del Norte-based “religious organization” called Socorro Bayanihan Services, Inc. (SBSI). Quilario, 22, was born on November 10, 2000, in barangay Nueva Estrella in the town of Socorro in Surigao del Norte province.
But, before leading this group, Quilario would first be a humble member of SBSI in 2017 which was initially stationed in his hometown. But, in just a span of two years, Quilario would be endorsed by the founder and former president of SBSI, Rosalina Taruc, as the new leader of the coalition. In 2021, after Taruc’s passing, Quilario would officially hold the title. Slowly, this civic organization turned into a cult because of Quilario who likes to call himself Senior Agila.
How does a group qualify as a cult?
Usually, a cult refers to a group of united people who believe in and praise an idol, symbol, or God. They’re also most likely to isolate themselves from the general public, commonly stationed far away from society. In addition, a cult also follows a charismatic person as their leader who creates doctrines, rules, and customs that each member must strictly follow.
That being said, it’s not surprising that people call Quilario’s SBSI a cult rather than a religious group. It was revealed that the organization is located on an island called Bucas Grande island in Sorsogon, Philippines. Plus, Jey Rence Quilario, the self-proclaimed reincarnation of God, recruited his members by promising them a spot in heaven if they followed his teachings. If not, they were led to believe that they would be in eternal damnation. What’s even more disturbing is the criminal acts that Quilario did to his members which resulted in an ongoing case in the Senate.
Senior Agila and 3 others were summoned by the Senate for allegedly violating
Ex-members of SBSI came out of the dark and exposed Senior Agila and the said “cult”. Last week, Quilario as well as three other senior members of the group were summoned by the Senate Committee for an investigation connected to their alleged shabu operations within the community. Not only that, their former members also accused Quilario and co. of qualified trafficking, serious illegal detention, kidnapping, rape, sexual abuse, forced labor, and even creating private armies to wreak havoc in the election.
The anonymous members also revealed that some of them were forced to be married at the age of 12 years old. Despite the witnesses’ statements, Quilario firmly denies all allegations. Aside from Quilario, other SBSI leaders such as Janeth Ajoc, Karren Sanico Jr., and Mamerto Galanida were tried for the same cases.
Some accounts of Quilario or Senior Agila’s “powers” were also stated during the hearing. Ex-members told the senators that Quilario believed he could stop the rain, make birds and ants sing, and even change his voice into a different person. Because of the evidence, senators Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa and Risa Hontiveros believe that SBSI is indeed a cult and that their criminal acts should be punished. As informed, SBSI has already managed to recruit more than 5,000 members since being founded in 1974.
Apart from being able to stop rains and make birds sing, a former member also claimed that alleged cult boss Jey Rence Quilario can also “change and contort his voice into different persons.”
