Who’s Going to Be The “Black Panther” in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever?

“Rest in Paradise, Chadwick Boseman”. The Trailer for the Black Panther’s long-awaited sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, was just dropped by Marvel.

In honor of Chadwick Boseman’s portrayal of the character, Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios have decided to “not recast” T’Challa. In light of Chadwick’s untimely passing, Black Panther’s story will begin with the supposed death of T’Challa in this universe. As a result, the sequel will have to feature a new bearer of the name. But, who will it be?

Disclaimer: All of these are just rumors and theories. Some are based on the comics while some are based on the great imaginations of Marvel fans.

Who’s the Black Panther in the Trailer?

In the teased trailer, it was never revealed who was going to take up the mantle as the new Black Panther. A mural of T’Challa was hard to miss which suggests that the titular character had just recently died, probably of natural causes. However, in an epic ending in the trailer, we saw the arrival of what looks to be “the new Black Panther”.

In the Marvel comics, it was Shuri who replaced T’Challa as the Black Panther

In the comic book series, Shuri held on to the title of Black Panther shortly after T’Challa had an unprecedented coma during the Dark Reign Saga in Marvel comics. Amongst all the possible characters that could replace T’Challa, Shuri (played by Letitia Wright) seems to be the most predictable one. However, we know that MCU likes to change it up by a notch. There’s still no saying if Shuri will be the next bearer of the superhero incantation, but the Panther God would side T’Challa’s younger sister.

This might throw some people off, but there’s also a possibility that Killmonger could be revived in this film, sort of.

Although the actor who portrayed Killmonger, Michael B. Jordan, said in the past that he won’t be returning to the MCU, we know how these things usually go.

Some theories around the web are suggesting that Killmonger hasn’t completely died and may be resurrected by the very thing he destroyed: The Purple Herb. To those who do not know, the purple herb or the heart-shaped herb is a plant native to Wakanda. This herb is passed down to every Black Panther for them to obtain enhanced physical abilities, as well as enter the Ancestral Plane through a ritual process.

Many fans are already rooting for a redemption arc following Killmonger’s betrayal in the first movie. Also, if you are still in doubt, remember that this is MCU. Nobody ever stays dead in this universe!

Nakia may shock everyone

T’Challa’s ex-lover, Nakia, could possibly get the spotlight in the sequel. Why? She has the morals, discipline, skill, honor, and abilities to become the next Black Panther. Nakia is an absolute great choice for the title which would definitely make fans ecstatic.

Other possible characters that could take the mantle:

  • Aneka
  • W’Kabi
  • Ramonda
