After a huge opening weekend, Disney and Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder suddenly drops sales at the box office in its 2nd week of the premiere.
Thor: Love and Thunder posted an impressive $144 Million during the film’s opening weekend. But, in week 2, Thor 4’s sales plummeted by a terrifying 68%, only adding $46 Million at the box office. This downfall is the current franchise-worst for a second-weekend release. It surprisingly surpassed Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (67%) which was released earlier this year. Although Spider-Man: No Way Home suffered a similar loss of 68%, it still topped Thor: Love and Thunder by almost $100 million during its opening weekend.
Even though the latest MCU Phase 4 movie is on a tight rope, it still holds the number 1 spot with total domestic earnings of $232.8 million. Aside from that, Thor: Love and Thunder could still break the $500 million sale worldwide very soon. But, even with a strong opening weekend, it still looks far from the $854 million gross sales of Thor: Ragnarok.

What caused this box office fall?

Just weeks after its release, Thor: Love and Thunder is already getting a mix of positive and negative reviews from various critics. Unfortunately, it is getting hammered with more negative feedback. The film achieved 68% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 6.9/10 rating from IMDB which makes it pretty average, to say the least.
Most MCU fans do not like how Taika Waititi portrayed Gorr the God Butcher’s story in the movie.
Many expected a deeper character introduction to one of the most fearless MCU villains. Additionally, after Taika’s comedic approach to Thor: Ragnarok (which most thought was the best Thor movie), Marvel fans wanted to see a more serious depth to Thor, Gorr, and Asgard. Taika is known for adding humorous flavor to his films, and Thor: Love and Thunder did receive plenty of it. While common moviegoers would enjoy the silliness and colorful approach, some are most likely going to hate it.
Well, it is not entirely Taika Waititi’s fault. He is a great director and the cast was already perfect. Maybe it is just because Avengers: Endgame set the bar too high for MCU films that even great ones look average from how Endgame created this imaginary benchmark.
On the flip side, this could be a turning point for Kevin Feige and Marvel. Now that we are in the middle of phase 4, future films should take notes from Thor: Love and Thunder, Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is set to be released this November while more phase 4 movies are coming next year such as The Marvels, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and untitled reboots of Fantastic Four and Blade.
