Geoffrey Hinton, the touted ‘godfather of AI’, announced his departure from Google after a decade with the company. He expressed regrets about his role in pioneering AI technology and cited several concerns that led to his decision. Hinton mentioned the flood of misinformation and the AI disrupting the job market as the main reasons for his departure.
However, Hinton clarified on Twitter that his decision to leave was not a critique of Google. Instead, he wanted the freedom to discuss the dangers of AI without considering how it might impact Google. He praised his former employers for acting responsibly with AI. Along with two of his graduate students from the University of Toronto, Geoffrey Hinton laid the foundation for the development of AI.
The godfather of AI warns about the dangers of artificial intelligence before leaving Google
Geoffrey Hinton said he is worried about how people might use the AI tools he helped create. In an interview, Hinton mentioned Russian President Vladimir Putin and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis as examples of people who might use these tools for bad purposes.
The godfather of AI explained that these bad actors might use AI for winning wars or manipulating electorates. He also expressed concern that generative AI tools will soon be able to make their own “subgoals”. This would mean machines could potentially make decisions that could be used for bad.
Hinton warned that Putin might create hyper-intelligent robots to kill Ukrainians. Once he does, he would want them to figure out how to do it themselves.
Geoffrey Hinton expressed regret about his involvement in pioneering AI technology. He consoled himself by saying that if he hadn’t done it, someone else would have.
Hinton believes that it might be too late to stop the AI race among tech giants. The only solution may be to carefully collaborate and discuss ways to control the technology.
Why is Geoffrey Hinton called the godfather of AI?
Geoffrey Hinton is one of three “godfathers of AI” and won the ACM Turing award in 2018 for his work on “deep learning”. He is a cognitive psychologist and computer scientist. He believes that he wanted to understand ourselves better by modeling how our brain works.

Hinton became a leader in the field of “neural networking,” which involves building computer systems that can learn from data and experience.
He has been criticized for not leaving his job earlier, despite going public about his fears. In 2020, Google fired Timnit Gebru, the technical co-lead of its ethical AI team, after a dispute over a research paper turned into a clash over the company’s diversity and inclusion policies.
